The first fish caught in the first Fishing Derby for Developmentally Disabled adults Friday at Rollo Pond in Farmington was caught by Annie Umbro, 55, of Farmington. Wynn Meyer of Farmington Recreation Department took the small rainbow trout off the hook for Umbro. Caretaker Cindy Curtis helped Umbro cast her line. "This is so not like Annie," said her sister Terry Umbro of Rumford, who came to watch and support the many first-time fishermen. Steve Shible of Farmington Recreation organized the event and called on Life Enrichment Advancing People, or LEAP, staff to help the effort, Rick Dorian of LEAP said.
It was a day of firsts. Doris Dolan of Farmington gets a little help baiting her line from caretaker Sarah Trexler at the first Fishing Derby for Developmentally Disabled Adults on Friday at Rollo Pond on the campus of the University of Maine at Farmington. Dolan, who turned 80 in June, had never fished before, she said. The line needed more bait after what she thought was going to be her first fish got away. The fishing derby sponsored by Farmington Recreation Department had about 20 participants who had an hour to fish or a two-fish limit.
