Winthrop tops Central Maine in PTL championship opener

WINSLOW - The Winthrop Red Sox and Central Maine Green Wave went to extra innings for the second time this season before the Sox escaped with a 1-0, 10-inning victory to grab the lead in their best-of-three Pine Tree League senior baseball championship series.

Both teams had chances early, putting runners in scoring position with fewer than two outs three times through the first nine innings. Once again the Wave's Kevin Main and Winthrop's Torey Carr went head-to-head on the mound, with both going the distance.

The Green Wave's defense was error-free and bailed Main out of a couple of jams when needed. Winthrop struggled in the infield, but Carr and second baseman Joe Wilson came up big to end any threats by the Wave.

Bob Cochran led off Winthrop's 10th inning with a single to center, stole second and advanced to third on a fielder's choice. With one out, Cochran on third and Ian McCarthy coming up to bat, Winthrop manager Phil Witherell called for a suicide squeeze play on the second pitch. McCarthy and Cochran executed it perfectly to plate the winning run.

Carr then retired the side in order to earn a complete-game victory. He allowed only three hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Main gave up nine hits in the hard-luck loss. Winthrop's Eric Palleschi belted a double and two singles, with Mike House adding a pair of hits. Shane Kibler and Ben Muniz each cranked a double and Joel Fernald had a single for the Green Wave.

Game 2 was played Wednesday night at Auburn Suburban Complex.
