No regard for society

Published on Monday, Sep 28, 2009 at 12:12 am | Last updated on Monday, Sep 28, 2009 at 12:12 am 19 Comments

In the Sun Journal's editorial published Sept. 18, the assertion was made that, "Will same-sex marriage be taught in schools, if it becomes legal in Maine? No — nothing in law, or curriculum, mandates any Maine student be taught about marriage, same-sex or otherwise."

The same editorial further states, "In fact, the court's decision states the plaintiff parents were indeed deeply offended, and can seek recourse through their local school boards or state legislature."

Unless the editorial writer has the gift of foreknowledge, there is no way he can assure anyone what will or will not be taught in a public school in Maine, nor what response the courts would make to a lawsuit against such instruction.

It is my personal experience that the typical school board, and certainly the state Legislature, has little interest in what I, or even a group of parents, have to say — witness the Legislature's hijacking of the whole same-sex marriage issue.

Yes, teaching tolerance is a wonderful idea, but tolerating all kinds of abominations appears to be the intellectuals' goals with little regard for Maine society, culture, morality and tradition.

As recently as 1996, homosexuality was recognized internationally as a psychiatric disorder that responds to therapy. Why the state of Maine wants to encourage a practice that serves society no practical good is beyond me.

"Creating ... a marriage culture is not the job for government. Families, religious communities and civic institutions, along with the intellectual, moral, religious and artistic leaders, need to point the way. But law and public policy will either reinforce and support these goals or undermine them." From "Marriage and the Public Good: Ten Principles," the Witherspoon Institute.

Its hard for me to say I do

Its hard for me to say I do not want gay marrige allowed in Maine other than my own personal feelings and religious background. Now all the gay/lesbian supporters can bash me and call me names. But thats the truth. I dont want me son/daughter to see same sex couples walking down the street holding hands. Thats how I feel. On the other end the same people I side with are the same people with the bleeding hearts that begged for the Somalis to be brought to Maine. So who is right. I dont know if either is. I say I dont want to vote for gay rights, you criticize me and call me a bigot. You dont want gambling in maine, I do, so yet again i'm evil. So this is my proposal....Let the homos marry, let me gamble, and get the somalis out of here!

While you do not want your children to see same sex couples walking down the street, does that mean should one of your children be gay, you want them to hide?

According to the US general

According to the US general accounting office, there are over 1138 federal and state laws, privledges and benefits that marriage provides. Civil Unions does not entitle couples to these rights. We pay taxes just like everybody else. All we are asking for is fairness.

So if it was called civil union but extended all the rights and benefits of marriage, you and all other gays and lesbians and the entire gay and lesbian lobby would be totally satisfied?

Actually, that is not true - In the words of the Executive Director of MaineEquality, Jesse Connolly, "It's easy to silo issues and to view the Maine campaign solely as an LGBT campaign. But, it's more than that. It is about generating momentum for the progressive movement."

Ah, religion never ceases to

Ah, religion never ceases to make me facepalm...

Think about it, is same-sex marriage REALLY going to affect society THAT much? Is it REALLY going to make your lives a living hell? Will it absolutely ruin your religious beliefs? I'm straight as an arrow but you know what? Gays should be allowed to the same rights everyone else has (and don't say they do because you all know they don't). To deny them is just as bad as racism or sexism.

"Christians are not going to

"Christians are not going to stand idle and allow people to act in ways in which to send themselves to hell." Stang, that is facism, not Christianity. Most of us differentiate between the two.

I know many people who are

I know many people who are against homosexual "marriage," and we dare to call ourselves Christians. Christians are concerned with the salvation of souls. Those who commit homosexual acts, and then die without repenting of those acts, cannot go to heaven. Christians are not going to stand idle and allow people to act in ways in which to send themselves to hell. Armorin, I would not recommend going elsewhere, because you have the only full deposit of God's truth already before you in the Catholic Church. It is because people started leaving the Catholic Church during the time of the "Reformation" (i.e., the Protestant rebellion) and living according to their own ideas, that we are facing the issue of gay "marriage" in the first place.

I don't know if it will be

I don't know if it will be taught in schools, but i do know that my kids got the full lecture on the subject by the Bishop at mass this weekend. I don't believe they absorbed the Bishop's message, but they know now that there is such a thing as homosexual marriage. Either way, I'm ok with it. The overall issue is a part of society now. Whether it's marriage or just the fact that a classmate might have same sex parents, it's part of life. Time to accept it and deal with it people. I do know that the more I hear my church speak out on this issue, the more I want to go elsewhere.

"As recently as 1996,

"As recently as 1996, homosexuality was recognized internationally as a psychiatric disorder that responds to therapy." That is a false statement and a total distortion of truth. Recognized by who? Some religious wacko who still claims the world is flat? There, folks, there is a perfect example of the evil that is driving this campaign. Howard is totally worthy of blame for speading false distortions and if he is mentally stable he must be called on that. Every reputable mental organization in the world now recognizes that homosexuality is not an illness, but pathological lying is.

"As recently as 1996,

"As recently as 1996, homosexuality was recognized internationally as a psychiatric disorder that responds to therapy." WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. Okay, maybe I'll give you a point in that some fringe psychologists may claim it's a psychiatric disorder, but I would challenge any evidence that they have that it "responds to therapy." This has been debinked time and time again.

"Yes, teaching tolerance is a wonderful idea, but tolerating all kinds of abominations appears to be the intellectuals' goals..." However, it's only an abomination to folks like you. There are others who realize and understand homosexuality is not a choice-one is born that way. Homosexual behavior may be a choice, but by the same logic, so is hetersexual behavior. Why do you think it is that so many deeply closeted homosexuals have been able to "pass" as hetero for years, even their entire lives?

Please, don't present the biased research done by a right wing institutes as support for your arguments. I fails the straight face test.
