Clothes dryer sets off fire alarm

Deputy Chief Richard Coulombe of the Rumford Fire Department, right, watches as Mexico firefighters don air packs and breathing equipment to assist Rumford Lt. Keith Bickford in the basement of the former bar Jack's Place, right, at 137 Rumford Ave. at about 12:20 p.m. Wednesday. A third-floor tenant called 911 to report a fire alarm activation and the odor of gas in the basement. Coulombe said their meters didn't detect any gas. He said he believes dust or moisture from a working clothes dryer that wasn't vented outside, set off the alarm that was mounted over the dryer. Six Mexico firefighters responded to a call for manpower after none responded from Rumford to the first call for extra help.

its a scary thing... i

its a scary thing...

i have fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in my home. a little after i opened my basement door the alarm in the hall went off. i realized how hot it was so i decided to go to the basement to investigate in case of a fire. the basement was cold. so i went back upstairs to smell and look around hoping that it wasn't anything serious. then i realized that it must be my dryer.

now, i never leave appliances running when i leave my home or while i sleep for fear that a fire would start.

this is a brand new whirlpool front load dryer that i just purchased in feb. or a little after. there was no fire-thank goodness. but you can never trust any of these things.

Most of the call force is

Most of the call force is gone. They only get paid once a year and have other jobs to support their families when the jobs leave they leave. Those that have not moved away are working out of town like my son and can not respond when there is a call. Be prepared. now that there are only two men per shift at the station when a call goes out the trucks will pull up but there is nothing that can be done, the two men will be helpless to just stand there and watch it burn. Any one who can help in any way should see Chief Chase about goining the call force to serve in whatever capacity they are able. Everyone needs to contact their selectmen and the town manager. Maybe the police can do double duty as fireman.
