Lightning sears man's shoes

POLAND — A 25-year-old Poland man was shaken up Saturday when lightning hit near him as he sought refuge from a thunderstorm at Tripp Lake.
Both of Paul Parker's sneakers had holes burned in them in their insteps after lightning struck the ground near where he was standing about 2 p.m., said Androscoggin County Deputy Dennis Sampson. Sampson said emergency workers told him that Parker "seemed all right, just very shaken up" after the incident.
Parker and his brother, Scott Sanborn, 32, of Cape Elizabeth, were out on the lake fishing from a canoe when a thunderstorm came up Saturday afternoon, and they went to Tripp Lake Girls Camp for shelter, Sampson said. They stood under an overhang to get out of the rain, but when Sanborn went to the shore to check on the canoe, lightning struck near the other brother, Sampson said. The lightning didn't strike Parker, but he was affected by the shock.
Poland Fire and Rescue took Parker to Central Maine Medical Center for evaluation, but he was not believed to be seriously injured, Sampson said.
