Police identify I-95 victim as Lewiston woman
PORTLAND — Police have identified a Lewiston woman as the victim of Monday's fatal traffic accident on I-95.
Safia Ahmed, 23, was driving on a learner's permit when her vehicle swerved into the northbound lane, crossed the median and flipped, according to a release issued Tuesday morning by Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland.
Her vehicle landed on top of a car in the southbound lane driven by Joshua Emery, 21, of Mechanic Falls.
McCausland said Ahmed died instantly. Her passenger, Warsame Elmi, 21, of Lewiston, was taken to Maine Medical Center for multiple injuries, according to police. Emery, who hurt his arm in the crash, was treated and released.
The accident occured at about 3 p.m. in Portland.

If Elmi gets better health care than McEmery, then we need universal heath care. And how do you know he has no assets? I saw nothing in the article stating that he's unemployed. It's very ignorant to suggest that Safia got her permit without having to take the written test like everyone else. That's right up there with the mythical 11-letter license plate.
I feel sorry for Mr.Emery
I feel sorry for Mr.Emery because he won't have recourse against Ahmed and Elmi since they have no assets. He will get stuck with the medical bill and Elmi will get free healthcare.This is the second time recently a Somali caused hazardous situation when learning how to drive.The D.M.V. should only allow them to drive under licensed driving school.

Was the passenger fully licensed (giving her lessons?) If not, why would somebody with only a learner's permit be driving on 95 in Portland? Like ojhuig, I remember learning on mostly back roads, parking lots, etc, not a busy highway. Maybe RMV should take a closer look at their rules. Poor woman, but she also could have killed her passenger and the guy whose car hers landed on!

People should learn how to drive on the highway too. People who learn in a parking lot only end up learning to drive like their in a parking lot.

Brian, what you say makes sense, and I only have that one experience that I described earlier... but he REALLY freaked. I wouldn't take someone with a permit on the highway now, just based on that experience.

Yikes, poor thing. I learned
Yikes, poor thing. I learned on back roads but I remember taking my ex husband on the highway with his learners permit and he freaked out, piled on the brakes and put it sideways across both lanes. He'd have killed us all if there had been any traffic that day. After that we stayed on the back roads til he got his license and a little more confidence.
