South Portland Police tactical team to train on Waldo Street

RUMFORD — Members of the South Portland Police Special Reaction or "tactical" Team will be conducting a training exercise sometime on the morning of Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the end of Waldo Street, according to Rumford police Chief Stacy Carter.

Carter told selectmen at Thursday night's meeting about the exercise, to alert the public and alleviate fears and concerns people may have on seeing people running around or near buildings while outfitted in military and tactical gear and armed with simulated weaponry.

Rumford police officers will also be participating in the training.

"It's not a real event," Carter said. "They train, we'll benefit."

The South Portland team, which is used to stabilize and resolve high-risk calls, is also undergoing training at the Army's Bog Brook Training Facility in West Bethel.
