Taxpayers get to decide

On Nov. 3, I will be voting "yes" on Question 4 to enact the Taxpayer Bill of Rights.

There are many reasons why Maine taxpayers need TABOR now more than ever. Many recent reports have brought to light just how irresponsible the state and local governments are with taxpayers' money. The public needs to rein in this behavior in Augusta and tell the politicians: It is time for the voters to decide.

According to a recent report, in the past decade Maine's economy has been in a crisis. Jobs in the private sector have been disappearing and Augusta has responded by taking more money from families and adding four times as many government jobs; more bureaucrats funded by tax dollars.

Another shocking fact is that state spending has gone up by nearly half in the same period — doubling the rate of inflation. The state is spending more than taxpayers can afford. That needs to stop.

TABOR will allow the taxpayers to make the decision on increased spending. At a time when most Maine families are struggling to get by, the last thing families need to deal with is higher taxes to fund the Maine government's spending addiction.

It is time to tell elected officials that it is the taxpayers' turn to decide.

I encourage others to join me in voting "yes" on Question 4 on Nov. 3.

TABOR, a.k.a. Taxpayer Bill

TABOR, a.k.a. Taxpayer Bill Of Rights is a nice enough sounding name, but it’s also been a disaster where it’s been implemented, such as Colorado. In fact, Gov. Bill Owens (R) had to call a five year moratorium on TABOR and a related ‘Amendment 23’ because of the financial ruin wrought there. Citizens are invited to view the history of that fiasco by Google search.

TABOR and its mutations have been defeated or are being defeated based based on merits in OK, OR, NE, MI, and NV despite out-of-state instigators such as noted government and tax hater Grover Norquist, (“Americans for Tax Reform”) and massive funding from such pillars of society as New York real estate magnate and failed wannabe politician “Howie Rich”. In fact, if it were not for out of state funding from Rich and company, TABOR would never have seen the light of day. For a report on Mr Rich, Google his name and take your pick.

Quite pertinent to Maine, a good presentation on the rural face of TABOR by the Nebraska Farm Bureau can be found at:

We Maine citizens deserve and want civil, fact-based discourse on issues facing us and we want the spoilers to stop poisoning the process with wanton distortion and misleading propaganda. Our American democracy demands it, now more than ever.
