While watching the advertisements on the upcoming elections, I have to smile when it is asked, "Do you remember." I remember the last time TABOR was around. The residents of Auburn and Portland should remember it, too.
In Auburn, "Defeat TABOR" was the rallying cry from every government official. They said something to the effect of don't pass this and we'll treat you right. Then, in Auburn, homes were re-evaluated — to the government's benefit. How many citizens were almost taxed out of their property? Portland also had a hefty property tax hike.
This time might be more dangerous, as the state is pulling back from its education obligations — there is just no money left. And just who is going to put up the slack? The property owner.
TABOR will be the taxpayers' only savior this time. While not perfect, it's the only friend property owners in this state will have.
I talk from experience, as I sat on the Mechanic Falls Town Council for nine years and have sat on its budget committee ever since.
Ollie Emery, Mechanic Falls

The problem lies in the Tabor bill and Excise tax bill both take aim squarely at municipal government and do very little to change state government and the ever growing spending. If people are really fed up than perhaps they will consider new faces in Augusta, the dems have had some 40 years and only made it so much worse. Compare Maine to NH (same population too) in budget and other than Highway funds due to our much larger state, exactly why are we so much a bigger budget in Augusta?> Why do we expand federal guidelines for care when we cannot afford what we now need to provide? Neither of these bills will change anything and even if they did the state would simply cut back what it gives the municipalities and avoid any real change for the better. Municipalities have very little left to cut, with the absolute vast majority being personnel. For anyone involved, good luck on the next union contract in any town regardless of which side of the bargaining table you are on, its going to be very difficult to continue to pay a lions share of employee and family health and dental plus give a 3-4% annual wage increase when many in the private sector are going without raises while their healthinsurance is rising by double digits.
Exactly Mr 61. None of this is going to force the state to be more responsible with our money. I wouldn't want to be responsible for balancing municipal budgets if this passes. Actually, there's not much to worry about. Even if the measure passes, it will be suspended. The only way to get meaningful reform in Augusta is to vote all of the spenders out. That takes an electorate with the guts and intelligence to elect the right people, so things don't look very promising.
So we have another people hater in the group. People are elected because they care about this state. Since you and bobby don't , why don't you guys move!
tron, the more that people like me decide to leave this state will eventually mean less money for you to collect disability, Section 8 housing, food stamps and free health care...be careful what you wish for...if youpaid income tax or property tax you'd actually understand that fact, but you'e too busy buying your piggish face at the trough and asking what is there for you...
Good bye, and don't let the door hit you on the way out. People like you have made this state worse. You claim to have a solution, but you only make things worse. Good bye and take Big Love with you. Oops, that's right you'd have to drag your wife with you since she's the one who has supported you all these years.
Beacuse I love my state too much to just give up on it. I don't hate people. I'm just waiting for the gullible ones and the people they elect, to finish screwing up Maine so hard working, tax paying, FISCALLY conservative leaders can make it better again. I guess that means you should leave.
Amen Scott. I think it's high time for the state programs to end. Do you really know how long this has been going on? The workers get fleeced while the the takers just keep on taking. I hate to break it to you Scott but as long as the dems are in charge things in Maine will not ever change.
Rex you think we will do it on the backs of those who rely on state programs? HA! you say that like it is a bad thing. those people need to get off their butt and start becoming productive members of society. I've worked in downtown Lewiston for the past 21 years and I see firsthand what the FAILED welfare policies the compassionate but economic illiterates in Augusta have wrought. There are people with just enough welfare money to eat, pay rent in crappy tenements and don't care how filthy the place is since they have no vested intrest in thebuilding and don't care where the trash piles up. Every day I see people wandering around town looking for drink, drugs, or trouble. It's not just antedotal stories because I work on the streets. Those people aren't there because they are or were exploited by some souless corporation, they are there because they don't know any better and were told the lies that someone else owes them a living.
combine that with the fact that what once were vices are now habits. The only thing this state owes them is an equal opportunity to succeed. It would appear this state is only providing them an equal opportunity to fail. This country is broke and it is a matter of time before the government checks either stop or bounce and then what do you think the peeps will do? Move to another town? Hardly. They will be heading out to the neighborhoods where the working people live, and then it will get ugly real fast. cut taxes cut spending and leave people alone, those fools in augusta and washington aren't smart enough to tell me how to live. Liberals have good intemtions and bad information, that is a recipe for disaster.
That's right, Scott! The money IS there.. it's just poorly utilized. It's about time FOR ONCE that the working people and property owners of this state stand up for what's right. Last time, everything in Portland went up; right down to the stupid city trash bags. NO MORE!
It is the undauntable thought, my friend. The one that says, "I'm right!" ~Bobby Sands
And that is EXACTLY where there problem is Rex. Most of the people that "rely" on state programs are those that won't get off their ass. They are career welfare recipients. We are tired of being the ones that pay for this program, that program, every stinkin' program that it out there. Enough is enough! TABOR Rocks!
