Catholics give $41,000 to fight gay marriage

LEWISTON — Catholics gave more than $41,000 during a second collection taken in churches to support the campaign seeking to overturn Maine's law allowing same-sex marriage, according to a campaign finance report.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland, which registered with the state as a ballot question committee, filed a report Friday outlining fundraising and spending based on its efforts targeted at repealing the law.

No parishioner contributed more than $100 directly to the plate, according to the report, which must include individual donor information for donations of that size.

Other dioceses and bishops, ranging from Portland, Ore., to the Virgin Islands, contributed about $215,000 to the effort, according to the report. The largest donations, $50,000 each, came from the Roman Catholic Church of the Diocese of Phoenix and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

All monies were passed over from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland to the Stand for Marriage Maine political action committee.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland also made $33,000 worth of in-kind contributions, including the salary for Marc Mutty who is on a leave of absence from his job with the diocese to help lead the Stand for Marriage Maine effort.

Previously, the diocese contributed $100,000 to Stand for Marriage Maine. That money was drawn from a donation made to the diocese by someone who earmarked it for "causes such as these," Mutty had said.

Campaign finance reports from ballot question committees and PACs covering activity from July through September are due Oct. 13.

The Church's tax exempt

The Church's tax exempt status should be examined by the AG's office. Presumably some donors are taking a tax deduction which would not be available to them if they contributed directly to the "Stand for Marriage Maine political action committee" or the Church's PAC. What happened to the "separation of church & state"?

There are very complex IRS

There are very complex IRS rules that govern more than just "candidate support" but since this money did not get entered onto the Church's books it is more like the grocery store that asks customers for a $1 for the local food bank. Lobbying is also a permitted function for 501c3's and I am sure the lawyers for the church understand the boundaries. My AG comment was not appropriate to this situation.

My underlying concern is the "wall of separation" (between church and state) as referenced by Thomas Jefferson in the early 1800's. This concept has been so cavalierly & forcefully breached here & elsewhere that it may never be repaired.

The church's tax exempt

The church's tax exempt status prevents it from endorsing a candidate for office, not from taking a stand on issues.

The Prince of Peace parish

The Prince of Peace parish of Lewiston made it perfectly clear that "Donations are NOT tax deductible and that if donating by check, checks are to be made out to STAND FOR MARRIAGE MAINE."
This is not a maybe or a guess, this is fact. It can be easily verified by checking and reading their bulletins.

Then how come mostly dollar

Then how come mostly dollar bills were put in the basket with no names, so is that tax deductible? And besides out of 200,000 church members, only $41,000 collected? That shows how people are fed up being brainwashed by the bishop and this church.

I was responding to

I was responding to LisbonBrad regarding people taking tax deductions. If some are doing that, they are doing it on their own without the blessing of the church. Cash donations without receipts are also not verifiable therefore a deduction cannot legitimately be taken. I was merely pointing out that that was made very clear to people.

Too bad they didn't support

Too bad they didn't support their Catholic church with that money. Maybe they could keep their churches open! Perhaps they should supported their parishioners with "Love as you would like to be loved." Perhaps that money should have been directed towards fighting the high divorce rate between heterosexual couples...I recently read the local divorces granted and most of those granted (80%) had been married less than 5 years.

No abortions, but it's ok to let these kids die of starvation?

When I was younger and an altar boy, 50 grand was what you could expect from the twin cities for a special collection. Granted it has been a while since I've attended mass, but I find it hard to believe that is all they collected from the entire state, recession or not. Perhaps this may be closer than I thought.

In one of the recent last

In one of the recent last bulletin, the church expected to rain between $100,000 to $300,000! It just shows how many are fed up with the brainwashing of this church. Vote NO on 1 and show that LOVE beats hate anytime!
By the way, I too, have given up this church!

Sammie, the following is a quote taken from your post. "This money comes from the loving, committed Catholics pockets not wanting to see the death and destruction caused by the devastating homosexual lifestyle"

What about the death and destruction (physical & emotional) caused by the devastating damage done to children by priests that have molested them?? What about the death and destruction of marriages in the Catholic Church as people are allowed to annul marriages as the church pretends that they never existed? Catholics don't believe in divorce but annulling a marriage is fine?!? I have always found the Catholic church to be full of hypocrites. I'm not sure where the love and committment is that you are referring to!

This money comes from the loving, committed Catholics pockets not wanting to see the death and destruction caused by the devastating homosexual lifestyle. Excerpts from the other article say it all: New survey shows rising support for civil unions
By The Associated Press (AP) - An increasing majority of Americans favors allowing same-sex couples to obtain most of the same rights as married straight couples, but only 39 percent support legalization of same-sex marriage, according to a poll released Friday.
The Pew Research Center said support for civil unions has risen to 57 percent, up from 54 percent a year ago and 45 percent when the question was first asked by Pew in 2003.
Views on legalizing same-sex marriage remained almost unchanged from last year, with 53 percent opposed and 39 percent in favor, the center said.
Supporters of same-sex marriage were divided over the best way to pursue legalization, according to the survey. Forty-five percent of them favored pushing hard to legalize it as soon as possible, while 42 percent said pushing too hard for swift legalization might trigger a backlash against gays and lesbians.
There was more support for same-sex marriage among women, adults under 30 and college-educated people than there was among men, older adults and those who did not attend college.
Asked about homosexual behavior, 49 percent said it is morally wrong, 9 percent said it is morally acceptable and 35 percent said it is not a moral issue.
