Let freedom ring

This is in response to the letter from the Rev. Keith Hamel (Oct. 9), from which I quote: "Like it or not, our nation was established on Biblical teachings."

My history lessons also taught me that this nation was established with a separation of church/state and freedom of religion. I think that means I have a right to interpret the Bible for myself.

I remember my mother's Women's Day magazines of the '40s and '50s had a popular item each month: "How Can This Marriage Be Saved?" Sometime in the '60s or '70s it changed to "Should This Marriage Be Saved?" Now we see couples asking should we marry or just live together? There is no law against how heterosexual couples relate. The concept of marriage has evolved; people have choices. No one has to be stuck in a miserable situation.

The bill states that no church is required to marry same-sex couples. Isn't that enough for those who are against it? Why do they feel they can dictate to the rest of us?

There are religions that welcome all people, gay or straight. Why should they be told that is wrong?

The fear-mongering that homosexuality will be taught in the schools is ridiculous. What must be taught in schools is tolerance.

Let freedom ring.

“We establish no religion

“We establish no religion in this country, we command no worship, we mandate no belief. Nor will we ever. Church and state are, and must remain, separate. All are free to believe or not believe, all are free to practice a faith or not, and those who believe are free and should be free, to speak of and act on their belief. At the same time as our constitution prohibits state religion, establishment of it protects the free exercise of all religions. And walking this fine line requires government to be strictly neutral.”

Religion can be an

Religion can be an addiction, just like gambling, stealing, and being a workaholic. Sadly, addicts can only help themselves. The rest of us must not enable them by validating their sickness, making excuses for their abuse, or a "let's all get along" attitude. The "high" of self-righteousness knows no bounds, but demands more and more...just like any other addiction. We once put addicts' demands into law: prohibition. Addicts fought inter-racial marriage on religious grounds. Addiction must not rule Maine law or our lives, even if it rules theirs.
