Phillips road repair contracts awarded

PHILLIPS — Selectmen awarded contracts to repair Wheeler Hill Road and Tory Hill Road to Thorndike & Son of Strong, the lowest bidder, according to information provided by Town Manager Jim Collins.

"Bids were awarded to lowest bidders in each instance," Collins said. "We hope to have all gravel work and a base coat of paving completed by Nov. 15. We will add a surface coat of paving in the spring."

The two roads were heavily damaged over the June 27 weekend by heavy rain. The county qualified for emergency disaster funds from Federal Emergency Management Agency, which will pay for the bulk of the repairs.

Thorndike bid $57,900 for work on the Tory Hill Road that includes ditching, culverts and gravel. Four other bids ranged from $66,389 from Lupo Construction to $110,650 from CPM Constructors.

Thorndike bid $44,900 for similar work on the Wheeler Hill Road.

Four other contractors' bids ranged from $57,382 from Lupo Construction to $92,300.

The paving contract for both roads went to Bruce A. Manzer Inc. of Anson for $95,187. Pike Industries was the only other bidder at a price of $104,044.65.
