UPTON — This town of about 60 residents will try to raise some money, have some fun and get ready for its sesquicentennial at the first Upton Fun Day on Saturday, July 18.

The Ladies' Aid Society is organizing events, which include its traditional bake sale and contests for pie-baking, fresh and dry floral arrangements, and photos. There will be crafts, face painting, a children's fish pond and petting zoo, and a horseshoe tournament. Ice cream, desserts, fried dough, a chicken barbecue, and hamburgers and hot dogs will be offered.

The society will sell raffle tickets on a quilt, an afghan and other handmade items.

All events take place in the town center, and proceeds will be used to help town residents with emergencies.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. there will be a reunion of those who attended the Upton School, which closed about a half-century ago, will take place at the Mill Road building now used for the annual town meeting. For more information on the reunion contact Melanie Bernier Farmer at melanief@megalink.net.

Tours of some of the town's most historic buildings will be conducted, including the library and Ladies Aid building, and the soon-to-open Upton House Bed and Breakfast next to the town office. It's the oldest home in town and owned by Jim and Wilma Rector on the East B Hill Road. A slide show of buildings and scenic views will be presented at the library from 1 to 3 p.m.

An organizer, Penny Bernier, said Upton Fun Day is a prelude to the town's 150th birthday next year. The town was incorporated Feb. 9, 1860.

Lots of volunteers are needed and those who would like to help or wanting information may call Bernier at 533-2010.
