Control government spending

Property owners need assurance that their taxes will not surge beyond inflation limits.

Apartment renters need assurance that their rental rates will not be raised due to an increase in taxes to the property owner.

Voting for TABOR gives these assurances.

The Taxpayer Bill of Rights is Question 4 on the November ballot, a measure that would control spending at all levels of government in Maine. Any increase in spending would be regulated by a formula based on inflation and increases in population. If tax revenues were needed beyond the prescribed limits, that could be done only by a majority approval of the voters.

Town and county budgets would be required to be open for all to inspect. At all levels of government, the ultimate approval needed for any large increase in spending would be from the voters.

Those who oppose the measure don't want the citizens to control their taxes. They prefer that those decisions be made by the relatively few in the Legislature or in local government who are more vulnerable to political pressure.

Opponents have spread misinformation about the question and point to Colorado where the people decided to spend more than the limits and voted to put it on hold for a few years before resuming their disciplined state and local spending. That state flourishes.

Maine can do the same thing under TABOR. I have faith that this system works.

I encourage a "yes" vote on Question 4.

Shields doesn't mention that

Shields doesn't mention that the TABOR II proposal controls spending based on consumer inflation. When was the last time a consumer bought a school district or a bridge, or a few hundred PhD's.? Do you pave the road outside your house? Do you patrol your neighborhood. Consumer inflation has nothing to do with government inflation or spending. Its a false measure. Therefore, it does not correctly provide for needed spending. Formulas don't do that people with judgement do.

Property Taxes are set by

Property Taxes are set by local governments not by the state (although the state does reduces them through the Homestead exemption, school subsidies, and municipal revenue sharing. We need TABOR like a whole in the head.
What a combo Shields and Mello both supporting 4. Surprising surprise. The two worst legislators in Maine's recent history.

"Town and county budgets

"Town and county budgets would be required to be open for all to inspect." Well Mr. Shields that is already the case, if you wish to do so. Virtually every town and country has its budget on line or copies at their local library or town hall.

"Those who oppose the measure don't want the citizens to control their taxes" The citizens already control their taxes, by the representative they elect. What you and all the other right wing wackos are trying to do is force their beliefs on the general public. You spout great sounding platitude all in defense of your mean spirited agenda. If you, and the rest of your hate filled group really think spending should be reduced, then elect like minded people to the legislature. You ran and won several times, but now you're just sitting back and wanting laws to work where you're too lazy to. It isn't fair and should not be tolerated. But the sound bites are simple and convincing, but the results could be tragic in the long run. Why not use the rules to get your way, instead of rigging the system?

tron, calling others who

tron, calling others who have worked a full life, volunteered for their communities and been leaders is just plain hillarious coming from someone like you who is the absolute definition of lazy!

bobby, despite the obvious

bobby, despite the obvious need you have to insult me, your rant makes no sense, just like most of what you do. If you spent half the time you use to insult me and channeled it into something positive, perhaps we'd all be in a better place.

I agree, this might be the

I agree, this might be the only chance the taxpayers ever have to put a leash on spending by the politicians. I (We) have to hold our spending depending upon our income, we should hold state and the feds to the same means. Most politicians really believe they know how to spend your money better than you do. Look at the MILLIONS of dollars the feds approved to spend on SIGNS telling the public that the road improvement projects are being paid for with stimulus dollars. Who cares where the money came from, it always comes from the taxpayers anyway, so why waste money on the signs.
