Simplify the law

The new distracted driver law took effect on Sept. 12. This new law covers driver distraction while using cell phones, texting or any action that would cause a person to be distracted.

The meaning of "distract" is: to divert attention or mind to a different object.

The new law forces police officers to give warnings instead of citations when a distraction violation is noted. If arrested and appearing in court with a lawyer, the charge would be dismissed by the judge, unless proven guilty of causing an accident.

I believe the new Maine law is good for lawyers but difficult for police officers to enforce. After a fatal accident, it is a little late for this law to be enforced.

The law should be simplified and ban cell phones, texting and hand-held games while operating a motor vehicle.

Nanny state libs strike

Nanny state libs strike again. What a ludicrous law, and the idiots that believe that banning cell phones while driving will solve anything are ignorant. If phones cause so many accidents then logic would dictate that with the rapid escalation of cell phone usage in the last decade that accident numbers would have skyrocketed in a direct ratio with phone sales. It hasn't happened. If removing distractions worked, then we should ban all distractions from vehicles - children, eating, radios, other passengers, scenery, etc. Another knee jerk reaction by those who think they know best how to run your life.

Gil, smarten up! It is called the "distracted driver law" because it does banned all distractions not just cell phones. The fact is that someone who drives while chatting on a cell phone is more dangerious then a drunk driver.

I back to Maine in June

I back to Maine in June after being in Florida for 11 years. I use a Bllue Tooth hands free device, a mini wireless head set that clips on one ear for my cellphone. In Florida virtually ever uses these. You do not see people trying to drive or walk down the street while holding a phone up to their head the way the people do here. I am amazed there are not more broken legs from people falling in the craters of the sidewalks and streets as they walk along in this position. I have only seen two Blue Tooth devices in use here. Both people sore by them. One fellow said he was on his fourth (you cant change the batteries in these tiny devices so when they want recharge any more you replace them) he like I and the people of Florida think they should be required for driving while talking on a cellphone. I love mine because I live by cellphone the way most people do a landline and I can keep doing whatever with both hands even cleanup after the dog with no problem. I have had some strange reactions to my Blue Tooth. Standing in line at the grocery store more than once people around me have thought I was having a very indepth conversation with myself. It was only when they bust out laughing and sid, I thought you were talking to yourself, I did not see the phone, that is so cool.... I was waitint for the pharmacy inside a store to open one morning when the techician said ,"I don't know if you can hear me?" I thought that was said that things were so behind that a pharmacy technician did not know the difference between a Blue Tooth aand a hearing aid. My friend here who has been through 4 has been through the hearing aid bit and also been asked if it was one of those things advertised on TV so you can listen in on conversations. Anyway the point is get a Blue Tooth and you can make calls without having to mess with the phone and receive calls the same and your hands are free to operate the car. My other queation is, why are you trying to get out toll money ehile the car

Studies show just as many

Studies show just as many distracted driving accidents with hands free devices. Apparently, it's the act of conversing with someone who is not in the vehicle that causes problems.

It is the undauntable thought, my friend. The one that says, "I'm right!" ~Bobby Sands

Don't forget eating while

Don't forget eating while driving and having to look for money so that I can pay the tolls on the turnpike. If I was to get into an accident while looking for toll money it would be the MTA's fault right?
