Before the same-sex marriage law was passed, the wording in the previous Maine marriage law stated:
"The union of one man and one woman joined in traditional monogamous marriage is of inestimable value to society; the State has a compelling interest to nurture and promote the unique institution of traditional monogamous marriage in the support of harmonious families and the physical and mental health of children; and that the State has the compelling interest in promoting the moral values inherent in traditional monogamous marriage."
The law also mentions the traditional monogamous marriage's unique contribution to the rearing of healthy children.
The new law deletes those words and takes gender out of marriage. Yet the television ads promoting same-sex marriage talk of outsiders harming their children (thus implying that those who want to maintain heterosexual marriage are outsiders). It doesn't make sense.
What has changed so that some Mainers no longer accept the wording "to nurture, sustain and protect children physically and mentally" by maintaining the basic building block of society — traditional monogamous marriage between one man and one woman?
Voters in 30 states have chosen to uphold one man-one woman marriage and voted against same-sex marriage. Voters in Maine can make the state the 31st.
People need to do what's right and vote "yes" on Question 1.

I am proud to be an octogenarian (80 something years old). I have seen a lot in my 80 years on God's green earth but a monogamous male is not one of them. This traditional family to be promoted is a fiction just as the picture perfect mom, dad two kids family of the 50s where mom was home content in her pearls with dinner on the table with martini in had at the door waiting for bread winner dad to come home and little suzy and tommy all perfect was a lie. Most women in the 50s were miserable. We were put down by our husbands and society and told we could do nothing and could not make it on our own and had to have a man. Many women were in abusive relationships and stayed because they had no way out. Many drank or where on prescribed or illicit drugs. no dreugs are not new, trying to medicate themselves into a stupor to exist. Now that women are more recognized for their ability to be independent and get out of bad relationships, our divorce rate is over 50% which says a lot.A family is any group of two or mor people related, by blood, marriage, or agreement between themslves based on love, compassion and consideration for each other the sex, sexual orientation and age of the participants is irrelavent. A mother and child, biological, foster or adopted is a family. A grand parent raising a child is a family or an aunt or uncle. It is time to stop with the myth which is what the new law did. Please vote no on question 1 for and support all real families.
Good one!
You are a plain bigot. You have had months to educate yourself on this issue. There are thousands of gay families in Maine that have children. If you cared about families you would want them to have the same rights and responsibilities.....ie..child support. Laws should be based on fairness to all citizens.
Reasoning with a liberal is like trying to pick up a turd by the clean end.
That's awesome!! My new tag line!
"Liberals love America like O.J. loved Nicole." Ann Coulter
The reason you don't equate the two is because you have no concept of what racism truly is. Prehaps if you educated yourself, naw that would cut into your "meetings"
"prehaps" hey how about writing in English?
Sexual preference is not a race Dan.

What? You mean racism is not a black and white issue? Well, golllllyyy....
Gay marriage is not a civil rights issue. Skin color is a civil rights issue. Same sex, sex is not. It is what it is, but stop trying to make it what it isn't, because it ain't...get it? The parrot made that up. Pretty good, eh?
Very good letter Lois. Our problem here is that out of staters are rallying with the homosexuals, the eyes are on Maine. Let's vote YES and let the out of staters mine their own business and take care of their own state. May God bless us all.

" Some people have become aware enough to recognize that families and love are seen in other than traditional Donna Reed families and that life, liberty and justice belong to all, not just heterosexual white people.
