Politics, religion don't mix

Published on Saturday, Oct 24, 2009 at 12:12 am | Last updated on Saturday, Oct 24, 2009 at 12:12 am 13 Comments

On Nov. 3, this Catholic will be voting "no" on Question 1. As a former bartender, it was always a given that politics and religion did not mix; it always causes trouble.

In September, I started to attend Church for the first time in awhile. On my third visit, the Monsignor gave his departing words: "Support Question 1." My first thought as I was leaving — politics and religion don't mix, anywhere.

I attend church to pray to God, the God who created and loves us all.

The family of 2009 looks much different than the family of 1909. Some may believe in Adam and Eve because "that's how God wants it." I believe God wants us to be accepting of our fellow man; to help our fellow man.

Too many children are born who are unloved and neglected. If a same-sex couple wants to marry and adopt children and bring them up and love them, what is wrong with that?

I want my sons to know the reality of the world and the options, not to be ashamed and hide in the proverbial closet.

Didn't God create us all? Doesn't he love us all? Then who will be the judge of us all?

Debra L. Heroux, Lewiston

The Church teaches that it is a grave sin to support legalizing any recognition of same-sex unions. She has very good reasons for this - I suggest that you look to the Church for the answer - that is, at least if you are trying to follow the truth and not buy into the lie of the homosexual activists just because it is packaged up and labeled with nice words like "love" and "acceptance". Sounds Christian, but it is pure hedonism and paganism.

I can hardly blame you for not understanding - so many Catholics are ignorant of their faith, and it's not their fault.

If you wish to know not only the what but why of your faith - read the Catechism of the Catholic Church and read the gospels. Read the Church's document on the issue, written by the current pope, and you will see that it has nothing to do with hate, bigotry or any of those other names that allow the same-sex crowd to feel better about themselves and their defence of sinful and unhealthy behaviour.

If however, your just another dissident Catholic who knowingly rejects the Church's teachings on so fundamental an issue, then be honest and stop lying about your beliefs. You can't be Catholic and support same-sex marriage. You have to pick one or the other.

If so many of you are so

If so many of you are so disgusted with the Catholic church that you attend, why go? God hears your prayers from wherever you are and watches over you always. It's not sitting on a pew once a week and doing bad deeds the rest of the week.

momof4, many don't actually

momof4, many don't actually attend the church but use this argument as a crutch to convince others of the groundswell of support agianst the church. The Catholic Church has been in decline for some 20 years since the world starting hearing about pedophile priests. This issue will not moce those of true faith away from the church in any greater nubmers than are already happening. Its a red herring!

Another BS letter that the

Another BS letter that the SJ has printed several thousand times too many. Exactly how many part time Catholics are going to write in and tell us of their shock and dismay when they learn that the Church is opposed to gay marriage? The SJ mail room must be overloaded with these letters which is why they release one every two or three days. Can't you guys use a little originality when you lie about an issue? Did you think that every non Catholic who reads these letters actually thought that the Church was behind the gay marriage initiative and that they would be shocked to find out otherwise? Every major religion in the world is opposed to homosexuality (the exception being the handful of priests that triumph or some equally brain dead lib will throw out as justification) and you honestly thought that the Catholic church would be different? If you want to cite religion and politics not mixing and damn the Catholics for opposing gay marriage, then you have to equally cite and damn the churches that are in favor, like the one the unbiased Sun Journal (yes, that's sarcasm) reported on their front page. Hypocrite and a liar, I'd stay away from churches if I were you Debra

Terrific letter, Debra!

Terrific letter, Debra! Here's Philip a Maine WWII Veteran talking about his 4 sons (one is gay) and how he fought hard for the rights of ALL of his sons:

For those who are too religious to understand how hateful you're coming across to the rest of us, I especially think you should copy and paste the above link into your browzer to witness what it means to be compassionate and loving!

God does love us all but

God does love us all but does not condone sin. I'm YES on #1 because they want to redefine marriage, they have civil unions and they have all the rights they need, but no, they want more. What next a man marrying his dog? God bless us all

Debra, in certain instances

Debra, in certain instances it would be immoral and evil for the church NOT speak out on issues that have become political, abortion is one, SSM another.

Suppose, motivated by our society's increasing selfishness and self-centeredness, a powerful movement came along calling for the right of couples to "compassionately" euthanize infants up to the age of 6 months. Should the church remain silent on what the Bible has to say about murder? I doubt you would think so.

And yes God ceated us all, male, female, and we all have burdens to bear, inclinations we are expected to overcome. True Christianity is a morally demanding Faith. God is a loving heavenly Father but He doesn't tell us to" just go do our own thing ." And its always for our own benefit.
