High school field hockey roundup: Jay outlasts Sacopee Valley on Beisaw's goal

SOUTH HIRAM - Kelsea Beisaw took a pass from Bri Farrington and scored the game-winning goal in the first half as Jay held off Sacopee Valley in the second half and slipped away with a 1-0 victory in a Western Maine Class C field hockey quarterfinal Friday.

The Tigers (11-4) will trave to North Yarmouth Academy on Wednesday in a 3 p.m. showdown in the semifinals.

Still, Jay made its one-goal lead hold up and barely outshot the Hawks, 12-10. Jay netminder Ashlee Quirrion made seven saves.

Telstar 5, Old Orchard 0

BETHEL - Amber Wiley scored a pair of goals and Sam Tibbetts recorded her 12th shutout of the season to lead No. 2 Telstar to a 5-0 triumph over No. 7 Old Orchard Beach in the quarterfinals of the Western Class C field hockey playoffs Friday.

T.J. Cowin contributed a goal and three assists, while Katie Sumner and Kayla Merrill also scored goals. Victoria Forkus and Jamie Steven had assists.

Telstar (15-0) enjoyed a 24-4 advantage in shots and 8-7 in penalty corners. Tibbetts finished with two saves, while Avi Bouchard stopped 19 shots for the Seagulls (7-6-2).

Messalonskee 4, Edward Little 0

OAKLAND - Second-ranked Messalonskee overwhelmed No. 7 Edward Little with an offensive onslaught and walked away with a 4-0 triumph in the Eastern Class A field hockey quarterfinals.

The Eagles (14-1) peppered the Edward Little goal with 30 shots, compared to EL's 4, and held an insurmountable 13-1 advantage in penalty corners.

Holly Oliver scored twice for the Eagles, while Katie Bernatchez and Kristone Bernatchez rounded out the scoring.

Kayla Cummings was busy in goal, stopping 18 shots for EL (5-9-1).

Bangor 1, Oxford Hills 0

BANGOR - Ashley Higgins scored the only goal and Melissa Mower preseved the one-goal lead by stopping an Oxford Hills penalty stroke in the second half to lift No. 3 Bangor to a 1-0 victory over the sixth-ranked Vikings in the quarterfinals of the Eastern Class A field hockey playoffs.

Higgins scored off a penalty corner when her shot deflected intio the net off the goalie pads.

Mower made two saves for Bangor (10-5). Mariah Kimball stopped seven shots for Oxford Hills (6-6-3).

Livermore Falls 7, Freeport 0

LIVERMORE FALLS - Hannah Therrien and Cathryn Ventrella teamed up to scored three goals apiece as Livemore Falls banished Freeport (9-5-1) from the Western Class C field hockey playoffs with a 7-0 victory in a quarterfinal Friday.

Samantha Greenwood dropped in the other goal. The Andies (12-3) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half and topped off their lead with three more goals in the second half. Erin Gats, Marissa Welch and Cathrynn Lake each earned assists for Livermore Falls.

The Andies dominated play, outshooting the Falcons, 32-5 and putting a lot of pressure on Freeport goalie Emily Daniel, who made 26 saves. Livermore Falls goalie Caylee Morris had a lighter day, making five saves.
