Roxbury firm building noise barrier fence for Irving

DIXFIELD — To reduce noise caused by the addition of a second shift at the Irving Forest Products sawmill, the company has hired a Roxbury firm to build a large wooden noise barrier.

Michael Gallant, left, of Rummex Fence Co. of Roxbury, and employee Mark Richardson of Rumford, were hired by Irving Forest Products's Dixfield sawmill to build a 300-foot-long, 12-feet-high wooden fence along mill property on Third Street to reduce noise caused by the addition of a second shift to meet increased orders, Gallant said.

Michael Gallant, owner of Rummex Fence Co., said Tuesday that Irving wants him to build a 12- by 300-foot fence along the mill's property on Third Street.

"It's a good-faith measure done by Irving for the benefit of town residents," Gallant said.

The project, which had been delayed three days due to rain, began on July 3. He said he is using local 2-inch-thick pressure-treated wood from Puiia's Hardware Store in Mexico.

"It's kind of ironic that we've had to put up a fence for them and not use their own wood," Gallant said.

He said the company hired enough workers for a second shift to meet increased demand.

A spokeswoman for the New Brunswick, Canada-based company contacted  said she was gathering information about the project but did not immediately supply it.
