Cut size of government

Published on Friday, Oct 30, 2009 at 12:12 am | Last updated on Friday, Oct 30, 2009 at 12:12 am 17 Comments

I am so sick and tired of reading about how every time there is a shortfall of money in the state budget, the governor and other officials in Augusta start cutting funds for schools and programs for the poor and elderly.

It's time to cut the size of the government in Augusta, and I mean all of it — state agencies, the Legislature, executive branch ... everything.

Government agency officials and personnel should take a pay cut, and limit the number of state employees. Things could be run with half the people.

But you don't hear the governor saying he is willing to take a pay cut or push for downsizing government.

Instead of putting the costs of big government on the children still in school and the poor people, it's time for the government to back off. The taxpayers can no longer afford the big government in Augusta.

Roger, your letter is spot

Roger, your letter is spot on! It appears that the role and mission of government has grown into a reverse Robin Hood story. Take from those who work and have...and redistribute to those who don't want to and don't have; the tip of the sword in Sherwood Forest has been replaced by the tax form on April 15th. If you really want to have your eyes opened take a look at www.maineopengov.org. People who are working three jobs or are part of the 9% plus unemployed will definately get a thrill out of seeing the salaries and benefits given to those who serve them. I am sure some in Augusta want this site closed down, as I overheard while walking through the statehouse. Those of us familiar with the governmental budget process have seen how the game is played at the local, state and federal level...always offer up the sacred cows...those that will attract a crowd to the statehouse steps...instead of the Third Deputy Assistant to the Undersecretary of Whatever. Is it any wonder I heard on the radio today, that two thirds of the voters polled think those in Congress right now should be turned out in the next election? Hardly, but they need to get off their duffs and go vote! Next election is Nov 3rd!

Government should be run as

Government should be run as effecient as a business.
When your spending other peoples moneys you don't have the incentive to be very frugal with it. When Taber #2 is the law, things will change in that direction.

One area this state can save

One area this state can save money is by blocking all nonessental websites from being accessed by state owned computers. There is no need for state employees to have access to personal email, any of the instant messaging websites, online poker or other like sites, facebook, online dating sites, ect..... The company I contract with doesn't allow these sites to be accessed while on the company network. It is a very easy setup to block these types of sites. Perhaps any state property should also be smoke free also. I am in agreement that many, many state employees could be let go. I have seen abuses time and time again and if they actually worked the 8 hours they get paid for it can happen. The private sector has cut, cut, and cut. It is time that our gov't actually do the same instead of using the elderly or children as a scapegoat as to why they can't. All we seem to hear is about is what new things can be taxed. We should be looking at ways to cut taxes by reducing the fat.

Government should not be run

Government should not be run like a business. Businesses and Government have different structures, different purposes and goals, and most importantly different governance. But if you would like to run it like a business you have to vote NO on 4. What business has an inflexible budget process that does not respond to business cycles.
But Maine tries. Government has adopted the Harvard Business school model of management by headcount - outsource, insource with contractors, temporary employees. Its a disaster because their is little institutional knowledge.

tron, everyone knows that

tron, everyone knows that for years the governor of this state was underpaid, heck even I make almost as much as he does. But lets also admit, its a weak governor form of government here, our legislature does most of the heavy lifting and even heavier spending, all this governor does is hire more assistants than any previous governor did - just do ae search and find out how many were on staff at mam Baldacci;s before and you'll understand the concerns of many. And Jal - this state government is so blaoted asd to redefine the word itself. Oh and how about that $200 Million lost by DHHS thats still not found, nor will it ever be. Just compare our budget to NH which has very simialr population and emographics...why is there state budget so much smaller, other than in transportation where our state maintains ore roads. Adopt federal standards for welfare programs and nothing more! Vote yes on 4

I'm confused, on one hand

I'm confused, on one hand you call the state employees overpaid and demand he take a salary cut, then state his isn't paid enough. Although you may make as much as he does, I guess extorting money from the frail elderly and their families has become very lucrative for you and your family must be so proud, I still stand by my believe that NO ONE working for the public in this state should make more than the governor. So what will it be, do we give the governor a raise or cut ALL the salaries of these public servants. And at least for now you have the ability to cut the salary of at least six people who work for the city of Lewiston, after all we are in a recession.

Robert61's picture

Great idea, tron, lets start

Great idea, tron, lets start with your salary, oh wait, thats right, its disability only, perhaps we should cut that as well...extorting money is an interesting slander, but from you, no surprises, I'm paid well because I do my job well, something Baldy could learn from LOL.

The truth is a perfect

The truth is a perfect defense against slander. Plus I never said you did not do your job well, just that you job is to delve into the accounts of sickly frail elderly people and all of their familys just to suck them dry. Again your family must be proud, at least my niece returns a service for her wages, unlike you. Plus we were talking about people the city of Lewiston pays. You cannot tell me an assistant Police Chief who oversees less than a hundred people is worth 85K a year. While I don't particularly like being on disability, I accept it, and I was in the workforce for longer than you've been. You're not going to bully me, personal information works both way and at least I've restrained myself.

Robert61's picture

tron, glad you finally

tron, glad you finally admitted you're on disability, I was growing tired of your attempts to lie about it, they say thats the first step to recovery. As to what i do, my wife also works in the same industry as me but you have no problem with her work? Come on, admit it, you're jealous becauase I have a job, and I beleive I have worked longer than you already, given how long you haven't worked...ON and everyone who works in law enforcement is underpaid in my opinion!

Wow you got me to admit

Wow you got me to admit something I've never denied. But to compare your job with that of Linda is really reprehensible of you. She is a well trained compassionate nurse, giving care to the frail and elderly; you hound those same frail and elderly AND THEIR FAMILIES, badgering and coercing them to giving you money. No, bobby, there are many feeling I have about you, but trust me, jealousy is NOT one of them.

Jabba, yes we can deny that

Jabba, yes we can deny that state government is bloated. The Brookings Report that fairly analyzed state government found only two areas of what you might call bloat. Too many school districts with too many administrators and managers throughout state government but particularly DOT and MRS. Many of these positions are long gone.
State workers are not over-compensated. They generally have lower pay but better benefits than private businesses. Unfortunately, irresponsible anlaysis done be groups like the MHPC create this false conclusion that state employees are over-compensated. A position by position analysis like those done by payroll companies will show differences mainly in benefits.
Can we do more, of course and we should.
But the mindless attempt to reduce government and sacrifice essential public services is unacceptable to all but a few irresponsible, self-serving, greedy, folks like Mr. Heutz. He is right in one area. Far too much of the tax burden is on the poor who pay at twice the rate that all other Mainers pay. After the tax reform package is implemented, we need to find a way to reduce the property tax from 44% of all taxes collected to something around 30% which will go a long way relieving the burden on the poor.

Jalbrecht1's comments are

Jalbrecht1's comments are accurate. There are only two areas of bloat in state government based on independent assessments - too many school districts with too many administrators, and managers particularly in DOT and MRS. Maine's state tax burden when compaired to all other states is in the middle to low range (in fact Maine's state staffing levels are at 1983 levels even though Maine has undergone a significant increase in population) - These facts can be checked BUT Maine does have a problem. Maine HAS a tax problem but it is at the local and regional level, and with the way that local and regional taxes interface with state taxes. Mainer's need to be willing to consolidate and give up some local control in order to bring down costs, but so far every time we try to consolidate, we create an uproar. School consolidation was poorly handled and created more of a problem than it solved. The state should have ended up with 30 school districts - not over 200. We also need to consolidate road care, access to types of medical treatments, emergency dispatch services etc. etc. Until these changes are allowed, costs will remain high. So please look closer at the tax problem in Maine so you can understand the real issues. State taxes are an easy target but it is the choices you and I allow at the local level and regional level that are really causing the problem.

Government should be run

Government should be run like most businesses. Instead of hiring more individuals they should be concentrating on making each employee more efficient which allows a greater work load, hence reducing cost impact of carrying additional overhead.

When are you harping on the

When are you harping on the state, Mr. Heutz? Why not start locally, where you have the most direct control? You want the Governor to take a pay cut, but Lewiston just appointed a DEPUTY Police Chief who will earn 15K MORE than the Governor. And the Police Chief earns even more. All this to manage a 100 person force? Yet the Governor has a much larger workforce to manage, budget to manage and responsibilities that the local cops couldn't dream of, yet you accept their salaries without complaint. NO ONE in this state should earn more than the Governor, just like no one in the Federal government earns more than the President. And this President didn't even get a raise, unlike his predecessor who got his salary DOUBLE.

tron - While I don't

tron - While I don't disagree with you about local and federal governments -- you certainly can not deny that the state government is bloated. Way too many workers, most over-compensated compared to non-government counterparts.
