Nightclub asks court to stop police 'harassment'

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A bar in Portland's Old Port that has been scrutinized because of fights and disorderly behavior by its patrons is seeking a protection-from-harassment order against the police department.

Thomas Manning, owner of The Cactus Club, says the heavy police presence outside - and occasionally inside - his bar has driven away customers. Lawyer David Turesky says police officers are trying to "harass, torment and ultimately shutter The Cactus Club." A court hearing is scheduled for Monday.

The city rejected the Cactus Club's request to renew its liquor license.

Police Cmdr. Michael Sauschuck tells the Portland Press Herald the goal is to eliminate late-night rowdiness in the Old Port, they're not targeting specific clubs.
