BETHEL — A free transportation system offered for the past nine years between Bethel village and Sunday River Ski Resort in Newry will now include Mount Abram Family Ski Resort in Greenwood.
"We are in the process of raising the funds to be able to provide the service we have for the past nine years between Bethel village and Sunday River Resort for 118 days this season, as well as between Bethel and Mount Abram for 15 Saturdays," Robin Zinchuk, executive director of the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce, said by e-mail Wednesday.
The Mountain Explorer Shuttle is one of 16 fixed-route transit systems that provide regularly scheduled bus service in Maine.
It is a collaborative effort of the local business community, the Maine Department of Transportation and the Bethel chamber.
Until Mount Abram co-owner Matt Hancock asked the chamber to include the Greenwood resort in its trip itinerary, Mountain Explorer only operated days and evenings between Bethel and Sunday River.
It stops at major lodging establishments, retailers and restaurants along the Newry resort access road and around town.
