Keep eyes on the road

As students at Jay Middle School, we are doing a project on the Lego League theme, "Smart Move," which explores transportation safety and technology. It is our objective to inform the community about the dangers of distracted driving, and to decrease the number of distracted drivers on Maine roads.

In September, a new Maine law against distracted driving took effect. It bans any activity that distracts drivers, which could include cell phone use, eating, using electronics, reading and putting on makeup.

Recently, 2003 data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was released. Interesting facts presented included that one out of every four traffic crashes is caused by distracted driving, and that more than 200 million in-car phone calls occur daily by cell phone users while driving. The NHTSA concluded that the use of cell phones, while driving, has contributed to an increase in the number of crashes, injuries and fatalities. Research also showed that hand-held or not, the risk from using a cell phone while driving remains the same.

People must keep their eyes on the road and not be distracted while driving. Driving distracted is a very dangerous thing to do. People should avoid talking on their cell phones, texting, eating, playing with the radio and any other things that are distracting while driving.

It is not just unsafe, it is now against the law.

Emily, Alexa & Kendra: I am embarrassed by all of the name calling that has gone on in the comments section of your letter. Often, instead of debating the topic and articulating their thoughts, ideas and opinions, people feel the need to verbally attack one another. One of the first rules in debating is that you may attack the idea, but not the person.
As the use of cell phones continues to rise, so will the number of traffic accidents and fatalities. Thank you for taking the time to write this well written article.

That's the whole point I am making. people like you and Emily throw these stats out as though they are truth when they are not. there is no data that shows that traffic accidents rising since the advent of widespread cell phone usage. You can't make a claim like that if there is no proof. It's simple alarmism, like global warming and the swine flu 'epidemic'.

Gil,

Statements like yours are exactly the problem with anyone trying to make a point that does not follow your narrow views, If you don't like someone's particular view it is categorized as a "Liberal" statement, pretty common for your type of beliefs, remember not every subject is black or white!! Your missing the point of Emily's letter.....,

I'm throwing the BS flag on your claim. There has been no evidence to show an increase in accidents since the inception of the cell phone, so how can you claim more accidents because of them? If I were you Emily, I would stop believing everything someone tells you and spend your education time trying to find a way out of Jay.

Gil you are so damn stupid I do not understand why you continue to post hear or talk out loud. You should be forced to sit in a library for two years and read every book you can so that you intellect and vocabulary get beyond their current second grade level. Do you even have the internet in you lean to?

Any problem that can't be solved with taxcuts, republicans pretend doesn't exist.

http://www.livescience.com/technology/050201_cell_danger.html - Because data on cell phone use by motorists are limited, the range of uncertainty is wide, those researchers said. The estimate of fatalities in that HCRA report ranged between 800 and 8,000.
http://www.californiainjurylawyerblog.com/2007/09/personal_injury_accide.. - Absolutely nothing that shows how cells statistically cause more accidents
http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/141696/ - They allude to a study done, no reference.
That's three strikes right off the bat. You call me stupid and yet you have no idea what constitutes proof to validate an argument, your research sucks, and I'm pretty sure you didn't bother to read them. Cut and paste from Google does not prove your point. And try to use better Grammar and spelling if you are going to insult mine. Just a thought.

You are stupid, you accept your research and dismiss any and all research that doesn't support your ideas. A fleck on a flea has more intelligence than you'll ever have.
