Veterans clinic move drawing closer

RUMFORD — Plans for moving the Franklin Street Veterans Clinic are drawing closer, an official said.

Jim Doherty, spokesman for the clinic in Augusta, said Friday afternoon that the veterans' organization is working toward a contract with the owners of a new site.

"We're still in contact, we're in the process," he said.

He declined to release further details about the location or when the contract may be signed or when the move may take place. He said it all depends on how much renovation must be done.

The move is needed to give more space for medical offices and have everything on one floor. Hundreds of veterans use the office's services.

The Veterans Administration has been working to find a new location in the Rumford area for many months.

The clinic has been at the current site for four and a half years.
Before that, it was in the old nurses' building on Lincoln Avenue,
which is part of the Rumford Hospital campus.
