High school football: Dirigo, Leavitt take top seeds

Doug Gilbert has the best of both worlds for a high school football coach this time of year.

Gilbert can tell his Dirigo Cougars to stick their chests out for posting a perfect record and securing the top seed in the Campbell Conference Class B playoffs. But he also has a weapon against any complacency that might set in with those accomplishments.

The Cougars wrapped up their spotless regular season with a 42-6 win over Madison Friday night. But the fact that they only led, 13-6, at halftime, has them understanding the importance of getting better for the postseason.

"I think after the first half of Friday night's game, they realize that they've got to work hard," Gilbert said. "I think that woke us up a little and they're going to recommit themselves now."

That would be bad news for Maranacook, which snatched the No. 8 seed from Jay with a 34-29 come-from-behind win over Oak Hill. Dirigo handed the Black Bears their only loss of more than eight points with a 40-6 decision on Oct. 17.

The final Crabtree standings were released Saturday, and Old Orchard Beach and Winthrop were the other teams to move up in the final weekend in Western Class C, which expanded its playoff format from four to eight teams this year. OOB picked up a home game by leap-frogging Oak Hill and Lisbon for the No. 3 seed and will host Oak Hill, which dropped to No. 6, next week. Winthrop blanked Lisbon, 7-0, to move up one spot to the No. 5 slot. That earned the Ramblers a first-round rematch with the Greyhounds at Lisbon.

Livermore Falls, whose only loss was at the hands of Dirigo, is the No. 2 seed and will host No. 7 Yarmouth.

With the new two division alignment in Western C, observers expected the balance of power to rest with the North, which ended up winning 11 of 14 crossover games. Strength of schedule plays an important part in the Crabtrees, which add a team's opponents' winning percentage to their own winning percentage. Five of the eight Campbell Conference teams to finish .500 or better came from the North, and because of that, Winthrop and Oak Hill, which finished 5-3 and 4-4, respectively, placed higher in the Crabtree rankings than 6-2 Yarmouth.

"I can't believe we go five and Yarmouth goes seven, with the record that they have," Winthrop coach Joel Stoneton said. "That's absurd. But, again, that's the strength of schedule."

Leavitt had the No. 1 seed in Eastern B clinched before Friday night's 36-0 win over, but the Hornets still didn't know who they would face in the first round until Saturday's games were decided. They now know it will be Belfast, whom they dispatched, 55-16, in September. Defending Pine Tree Conference Class B champion Morse is the No. 2 seed, followed by Gardiner, Hampden Academy, Waterville, Winslow and MDI.

Mt. Blue also needed to wait until Saturday's results, but the Cougars were waiting to find out if they would be sticking around at least one more week in the PTC Class A. They beat Skowhegan, 8-0 Friday night, then needed Brunswick to beat Mt. Ararat Saturday, and the Dragon obliged, 20-0. That gave the Cougars the eighth and final spot and earned them another trip to Bangor to face the top-seeded Rams, who beat them, 44-26, on Oct. 2.

Messalonskee edged out Lewiston for the No. 4 spot, which means the Blue Devils will travel to Oakland for next week's quarterfinal. Rounding out the field, No. 2 Lawrence will host No. 7 Skowhegan and No. 3 Brunswick will host No. 7 Cony.
