BETHEL — On Nov. 3, residents will have a chance to decide whether to go ahead with construction of a second gymnasium at the Telstar Middle/High School complex on Route 26. They will also decide whether to build a performance arts center at the same time.
The estimated cost for the two structures is more than $5 million. Financing would over 15 years. The loan, at virtually no interest, would come through the federal stimulus package. If SAD 44 does not use the money, it would stay with the state state for use during next year's round of funding.
Some school officials, parents and students have argued that because the complex houses both middle and high school students, there is often not enough time for teams from both age groups to practice in the single gymnasium. Sometimes, youngsters are bused to other gyms at schools within the district for practice, or are scheduled for late practice times.
The plan to build a performance center came about because of the student interest in presenting programs, as well as the growing interest among the community in the theatrical arts. Both buildings would be available for public use.
At a public informational meeting in July, about 70 people attended and were almost evenly divided on the issue.
The Nov. 3 balloting will be at: Bethel, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Crescent Park Elementary School; Andover, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Town Hall; Greenwood, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., town office; Newry, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., town office; and Woodstock, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., town office.
