All religion is cultural mythology, believed by its followers to be historical fact, codified into laws to create a conformist, orderly society and ritualized into practices to give it power and authenticity.
Like it or not, our country was founded as a secular republic. Practice your mythology in private and let others be who they are, in freedom and equality.
We citizens should be fighting to honor the spirit of our founding principles: "All men are created equal ... promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty ...government of the people, by the people and for the people ... (and) life, liberty and pursuit of happiness." All of these words are inspiring.
Yet we have the government of career politicians, by the lawyers and lobbyists for the corporations and the wealthy. We don't have capitalism, we have feudalism. Congress and executives live high on the wealth created by those of us who actually work and more people are homeless and hungry and it's all because greed, selfishness and dishonesty have replaced respect for the contributions of the working classes. There's the real moral decay — money and power is more important than people and social progress.
We're still polluting our planet and extracting finite resources, insane misogynists are trying to overrun Afghanistan while our soldiers need more support, many public schools are failing our children ... and we're arguing over who should be allowed to marry?
Get a grip, people!

It is sad that some Americans today do not realize the concepts that you stated so well in your comments and the spiritual foundations of this great nation; a foundation that makes this the greatest nation on the face of God's green earth bar none! Our government was established to protect and serve us not to grant and withhold freedoms from us. Let's all hope the majority of Americans never forget this simple fact.
Our founding fathers clearly established in the founding document of our country, known as the declaration of independance, that our rights do not come from government, but from our creator. Government exists to protect and preserve those rights - it does'nt have any authority to grant them or take them away. They did not need to appeal in the name of any particular religion, because every religion recognized the existence of a supreme being. Christians, jews, and muslims, etc - its all the same creator. Even people like Jefferson who did not attach themselves to a particular religion knew this recognition of god-given rights to be the key to a free society.
That is the difference between a free nation, like america, and a tyranny where the state denies recognition of god, but instead claims to be "god" - the grantor of human rights. These types are Communism, fascism, and other secularist states that mirror what the modern liberals and athiests are trying to turn this country into.

It was written by over 40 authors during a period of 1,500 years into 66 books and it all fits together perfectly without one item being false. Man has tried to destroy the Word and its people since the beginning. The Dead Sea Scrolls provided proof of the original old testament manuscripts. 12 disciples were threatened, killed (all but John) - yet they spoke out boldy and led the world to Jesus Christ. Today, the Bible remains the best selling book of all time and currently. MILLIONS - no BILLIONS are adherents and it continues to grow despite Hitler, Mao, Stalin and their atheistic regimes. Last year about 160,000 Christians were killed for their beliefs . . . yes, read that and ponder it - 160,000 killed for simply believing in Jesus Christ.
There is one way: John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
You too can come to the saving knowledge of life eternal. Call on Him and be saved.
You are delusional if you really believe your opinions are facts. Popularity does not have an impact on facts. Popular opion does sway many who cannot understand or face the facts, but the sheer number of people holding an opinion only reflects the strength of an opinion, not the truth therein.
If you think that "not one item" in your collection of deliberately mistranslated documents is false, you are capable of some very twisted logic.
The Islamic faith is growing at an exponentially greater rate than Christianity, and the Koran has not been altered since it was written--and we know who wrote every word of it and when. That is not good enough for you, though, is it? If you really cared about popularity, and the lineage of your Holy Book, you would have already converted.
You do not want to know the truth, I am quite sure. You are happier in your own little universe, where you can tell others what is right and what is wrong, how to live and how to worship. If you just change a couple of words and references, you are Taliban.

Conservative Concedes in Upstate Congressional Race
A staunch conservative conceded defeat to a moderate Democrat early Wednesday morning in a hard-fought contest for New York State's northernmost Congressional seat, a race that exposed divisions among Republicans over how far outside the party's base they should reach as they look to rebuild.
With 88 percent of precincts reporting, the Democrat, Bill Owens, was leading with 49 percent of the vote, while the Conservative Party candidate, Douglas L. Hoffman, had 45.5 percent.
As for "the country changing," a few boutique issues and races for governor doesn't mean the Republicans who nearly drove America into the next Great Depression are doing anything but hunting around for their next subject to smear.
That's all they can do, they're devoid of anything but serving the most ignorant with meaningless divisions. Elect enough Republicans and eventually the demage to America won't be repairable.
Oh, and in Maine ... how to the wingnuts claim "victory" when TABOR lost, among others the wingnuts favored.

No need for arguing any more and am I glad the yes vote won even with just a little more then half as much money then the no people spent. What a waste of money. Now maybe we can get back to the real issues and stop wasting money on foolishness
Yes and I said months ago that we should be trying to help with more important issues. I feel for the elderly when Senator Snow takes away some of their medical care because of how she voted...
There are much more important issues at hand and our President needs to get cracking at them instead of giving out money that isn't helping but hurting us in the long run. Yes it's nice to get a stimulus check but who's going to be paying it back?
"Creator" did not refer to a christian god in the Declaration of Independence. Most of the founding fathers were not christians but, all of them respected every other person's belief's and rights to those beliefs and rights to equality.
If you claim to be a christian, I would suggest that you research the source of your religion, its beliefs and its history. This is something that was standard until about 60 years ago. I think you will be surprised to find the source and purpose of he bible and christian holidays even the scheduling of holidays is significant. Start by looking up Emperor Constantine and Counsel of Nicea.
Cultural mythology? Does that mean if you didn’t actually experience it then someone else isn’t allowed to offer an historical perspective? No one can offer recorded history that you will accept or believe? That’s like saying you are a leaf that doesn’t know it is part of a tree. So by that line of thinking, the American Civil war is a cultural myth since no one is around today that witnessed it even though plenty of people wrote about it. What about the revolutionary war? Did that happen? Columbus sailing the ocean? Martin Luther nailing his 95 thesis’ to the door in Wittenburg? The crusades? What happened in the time of Jesus was witnessed and recorded as were his words. But by your line of reasoning, when you are dead and gone, you will be a myth, readily denied by all that live on after you.

Joanne D'Unger, NOPE because the people in the State of Maine have voted and they do NOT want homosexual marriage. The YES on 1 people did a great job in preserving what our fore fathers have done. They gave us traditions to carry on.. and so it will be.
Too bad the voters of Maine couldn't keep alive the tradition of owning slaves, just like our nation's forefathers, huh?
Odd you would say religion is myth and then talk about the founding fathers since they believe God gave us the rights of you talk about. See you left out part of your quote. It is "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." See they are saying it is God that gave us these rights not man.
Maybe you yourself should get a grip and not be so judgmental.
Actually, they specifically state "Creator," not "God." They were familiar with the concept of "God," and could have used that term if they wished.
I think they used Creator to keep God and associated religions out of the picture. Biblical stories are not good governemnt; some of them can be usefull if the right part of the message is used. Problem is, the few good ideas are offset by some really bad ideas. The God of the Bible does not tell us that slavery is wrong, but rather He tells us not to beat our slaves too much, not to maim them. He says it is OK to sell our children into slavery, or kill them the moment they become disobediant.
If you try to follow the logic, it gets impossible to figure out what to do. If God wrote the Bible, He could have made it easy to understand and to follow. He could have clearly and unambiguously weighed in on abortion, stem cell research, televangelists, the Internet, etc. Instead, men wrote it, corrupt and insidious men changed it, and we are left with a couple of interesting stories, but no answers.
Regardless, I firmly believe that most of the people who voted Yes on 1 did so because they are afraid of homosexuals, or because preachers priests etc, have convinced them that the Bible tells them to vote Yes. It would be great if I was wrong, but I have not seen any rational argument to dissuade me. One guy recently told us how the inclusion of all of these "extra" people in family /group insurance plans would bankrupt insurance companies etc., but I don't think he has a grasp of the whole concept of how actuarial tables work. However, if his figures are correct, it is the best argument I have yet seen. Heartless, probably incorrect, but the rationale is followable.
