100 years ago, 1909

It is understood that the Maine Central Railroad plans to make extensive alterations and repairs to the stations in Lewiston and in Auburn in the near future. The increase of business, both passenger and freight, demand better facilities, more track room and larger and more up-to-date depots.

 

 

50 years ago, 1959

Wintry blasts are just around the corner but no one would be able to tell it from sampling the weather in the Twin Cities yesterday. 

The mercury, without the help of sunshine, rose into the upper sixties to equal the previous record-high temperature for the date set in 1939.

From 56 degrees at 3 a.m. the temperature rose to 60 degrees at 1 p.m. By 9 p.m. the temperature was 54 degrees and it was 51 degrees at midnight.

 

 

25 years ago, 1984

The Auburn School Department's policy on substance abuse, guidelines for appointment of athletic coaches and guidelines for home instruction come up for review Wednesday night when the School Committee meets at Fairview School.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. with a report on the principal's role in Auburn's Effective School Program, given by Scott Meyers, Sandy Stewart and Paul Malinski. The city is in the third year of a five-year plan to make its schools more effective, based on national research on effective education.
