100 years ago, 1909

More than one person has been heard to express surprise that the small boys are allowed to play football on the City Park unmolested. The boys may be seen playing nearly every day and they do not keep down at the lower end which has been given over to them for a playground but prefer the good grass ground.

 

 

50 years ago, 1959

Annual Sadie Hawkins festivities were held Saturday at Bates College. Co-eds traditionally have to "catch" a young man during the day if they wish to have an escort for the Sadie Hawkins dance that night. Dean of Men, Walter Boyce presided over the dance, dressed in a colorful costume portraying the Little Abner comic strip character, Marrying Sam.

 

 

25 years ago, 1984

Gerda Haas of Lewiston was the first in a series of Maine authors to present a program at the Lisbon Falls Community Library recently.

Her reading and discussion of her book, "These I Do Remember, Fragments from the Holocaust" drew a large appreciative audience.

Mrs. Haas spoke of her own experience of the Holocaust and addressed the question of how attitudes have changed in the 40 years since the Holocaust took place.

Gerda Haas is a librarian at Bates College and a former member of the Maine State Board of Education.
