Falmouth overcomes Poland in rare Monday tilt

PARIS - Poland Regional High School's triple option offense did its three-yards-a-pop best to keep Falmouth's speedy spread option on the sidelines Monday night, dominating time of possession by a ratio of more than two-to-one.

But the rules still don't allow you to keep the leather tucked underneath your left arm forever.

Falmouth scored on three of its first six plays from scrimmage in the second half, recovering from a frustrating start to hammer out a 36-7 Western Class B football victory. The game was played at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School's Gouin Athletic Complex after Saturday's rainout.

"Caleb (Bowden) gave us a nice kick return to get us going," said Falmouth junior quarterback Zach Alexander, "and we started moving the ball on the ground."

Bowden quickly backed up his 65-yard runback with a touchdown from six yards out.

After an interception, Alexander scampered eight yards for his second trip to the end zone. And Bowden's 47-yard explosion set the table for Greg Oulton's 7-yard scoring surge up the middle.

And just like that, Falmouth transformed a precarious 7-0 halftime edge to a 29-0 disparity in less than eight minutes.

"We've found out that we're a strong second-half team," said Falmouth coach John Fitzsimmons, who noted that the performance mirrored a second-half flourish against Gray-New Gloucester earlier this season. "As a coach, it's a little maddening when you start so slowly."

Blame two holding penalties and an illegal block in the back for slowing the Yachtsmen (4-4) in the first half. But credit the Knights (0-8) for milking nearly eight minutes with their opening drive of the night and ticking off another five minutes with a grinding second-quarter march.

The first foray stalled after two third-down conversions and a fourth-down cash-in, ultimately ending in a punt. Round two fizzled when Storm McGovern and Sam Bennett stymied Poland QB Josh Cooper one chain link shy of the first-down marker at the Falmouth 13.

"It was going well," said Poland coach Mark Soehren. "The quarterback was making good reads. The line was giving him some blocks."

Cooper (25 carries, 121 yards) helped Poland avoid the shutout, chalking up a 35-yard TD on an option play with 2:15 remaining in the third quarter. Falmouth prolonged the drive with a roughing-the-passer penalty on third-and-18.

Poland amassed 231 of its 243 total yards on the ground. Conrad Labbe kicked in 17 carries for 85 yards, including a 38-yard ramble that triggered Poland's touchdown drive.

"Their quarterback's a good runner," said Alexander.

Falmouth ran only 14 plays from scrimmage in the first half and 15 more after intermission. But the Yachtsmen maximized their opportunities to tune of 11 yards per carry.

In addition to Alexander's 21-yard scoot for the lone TD of the first half, Bowden delivered home runs of 28, 23, 21 and 47 yards to accumulate 142 yards on only eight carries.

"He hits the hole hard, and he doesn't stop running," Soehren said of Bowden, a junior. "Our kids are still learning. We've got to keep our feet moving both on defense and on offense."

Sophomore receiver Jack Cooleen also enjoyed a pair of big gains — a 30-yard grab from Alexander, and a 13-yard catch of Matt Kingry's halfback option pass for Falmouth's final score of the night.

Cooper intercepted a pass for Poland, which concludes the season against Gray-New Gloucester.

"We only start three seniors. We start some freshmen," Soehren said. "It's a young group."
