Jay's newest police officer, Nicholas Gulliver, has begun his career in law enforcement through a position with the Jay Police Department.

JAY — The town's newest police officer said he finds being on the streets a little different than what he studied, but he's enjoying the career he's always wanted.

Nicholas Gulliver, 22, of Jay started this month. He fills the position held by Drew Hufnagel, police Chief Larry White said.

"The department made a good choice," White said. "He's a team player and we're pleased to have him on board. He has the inner drive to succeed in his law enforcement career."

Gulliver, a 2006 graduate of Jay High School, received an associate's degree from Andover College last spring, and in September completed the 100 hours of field training needed for the position, he said. He will attend the state police academy in August next year.

Previously, he worked for security at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, where helping people and working with them was the best part of the position, he said.

He now enjoys fulfilling his childhood desire. "Waking up every morning not sure what's going to happen is exciting," Gulliver said.

His first vehicle stop resulted in two arrests. He pulled over the vehicle for a taillight that wasn't working and arrested the driver for driving after suspension and his passenger for possession of illegal drugs, he said.
