Claims are debatable

Lois Snowe-Mello recently penned a letter to the editor in support of Questions 2 and 4. Two claims made in that letter require further exploration. She wrote that Question 2, (a law that would cut the motor vehicle excise on new cars), would give $800 to the average Maine family.

In truth, 68 percent of all cars on the road do not qualify for any reduction; only newer cars see the benefit. Instead, passage of Question 2 will likely hurt the average Maine family. Here's why:

The motor vehicle excise tax generates revenues for local governments. Question 2 would significantly reduce the funding needed to maintain 14,000 miles of local roads and 850 local bridges. Question 2 won't help average Mainers; it will simply lead to worse roads or increased property taxes.

Furthermore, in order for Maine families to save $800 dollars pursuant to Question 2, they would have to buy a brand-new car worth $66,666 every year! Hardly average.

Second, Snowe-Mello claimed that Colorado saw tremendous economic growth under TABOR.

That claim is, at best, debatable. What is not debatable is that TABOR was so unpopular in Colorado that the business community funded a $7 million campaign to suspend it in 2005 because of its negative impact on businesses, education and economic growth.

I listened to a radio

I listened to a radio commentary this morning and the speaker that supported the reduction in these taxes sounded very, *gasp*, liberal! He provided a well-reasoned argument that the excise tax is a very regressive tax and why not reduce it (NOT eliminate it) to help struggling Mainers, while at the same time encourage the purchase of hybrid vehicles to help reduce pollution. Additionally, he noted that 46% of municipalities spend LESS on roads than what they take in for these taxes; which means they spend that additional tax money on other things (this statistic comes from the Maine Municipal Association). Finally, he made the argument (one that I always have made) that if this referendum passes, municipalities will need to better prioritize their spending. The speaker that supported not reducing these taxes (from the MMA) gave the same old argument that municipalities rely on these taxes and that tragedies will result unless municipal governments continue to receive them at their current level or greater. He gave no persuasive argument to counter the other gentleman. I'll be voting to reduce these taxes!

The $800 is what would be

The $800 is what would be saved over the 5 years of lower excise tax...and if this passes my wife's new car next spring will be at least $800 saved in excise taxes and I might even be mroe convinced to buy a hybrid and pay NO excise taxes forever, which is significantly more saved.

Her letters are written by the Republican staff in Augusta not by her. She just signs them. I expect without reading them. Of course, I assume she can read and that is also debatable.
TABOR was a disaster in Colorado and its cousin Prop 13 was worse in California.

How Lois Snowe Mello ever

How Lois Snowe Mello ever got elected to office is just beyond comprehension. She can hardly add, let alone tell the truth.

Her letters do provide a good laugh break though!

Any problem that can't be solved with taxcuts, republicans pretend doesn't exist.

Ms Snowe-Mello is renowned

Ms Snowe-Mello is renowned for making up statistics or pulling them from FOX News, which is the same thing. You think this was bad, you should have seen the stats she quoted in the local tabloid, the whopper was saying 95% of people do not favor a public option when the reality was that 65% favor a public option. It is very hard to believe any this woman says, truth is a stranger to her.
