Saving Social Security

Published on Wednesday, Nov 4, 2009 at 12:12 am | Last updated on Wednesday, Nov 4, 2009 at 12:12 am 7 Comments

As everyone knows, Social Security is in trouble. I don't believe that anything can help, the final outcome — going broke — can only be delayed.

Back in the 1990s, I had sent these recommendations to my senators: That the cap of Social Security should be removed; that employee/employer pay a 6 percent tax each; and a new scale of payout should be implemented, especially to those who are on the lower end of the scale. I believe those in that situation should receive more than they are currently receiving. Also, that the Medicare tax should be at 3 percent, not 2.9 percent and, of course, not capped, either (I realize that Medicare is not currently capped).

If Congress would spend more time on waste and fraud from Medicare, it could save billions of dollars a year. My question is, why doesn't it?

. . ..uh . .Privatize Social

. . ..uh . .Privatize Social Security anyone ? Get rid of your other public options such as Medicare and Medicaid at the same time ? Right ?  That's a laugh , Republicans . i think what the writer may have been trying to say is that no government is anarchy , by definition . Yet , ( and come to think of it ) , fascism like we had under Bush - Cheney is a form of government and to think that eight years after 9.11 we are still using a 1960's era civil defense system . What a scadalous waste of time , energy , and money that administration was . They had no talent , brains , or ideas anyway . What do the Republicans have to say about health care ? Nothing : obstructionists to a man :)

How about us all taking

How about us all taking personal responsibilty for saving and investing for our own retirement instead of relying on the government to take care of us? Let's keep the money taken for Social Security and plan for our retirement. This way we can watch our money grow and have a retirement check we can live on. We should be able to "opt out", but of course that may never be the case. Now the current administration is trying to do the same with healthcare. Please remember, what the government gives they can also take away or limit/reduce. I prefer self-reliance and the private sector option in my retirement AND my healthcare programs. We should be in control of our economic future, not some state or federal bureaucrat. Anyone who thinks differently should check out our roads and bridges in Maine or ask Maine teachers about the health and benefits of their Maine State Retirement Fund.

Conservative Concedes in

Conservative Concedes in Upstate Congressional Race

A staunch conservative conceded defeat to a moderate Democrat early Wednesday morning in a hard-fought contest for New York State's northernmost Congressional seat, a race that exposed divisions among Republicans over how far outside the party's base they should reach as they look to rebuild.

With 88 percent of precincts reporting, the Democrat, Bill Owens, was leading with 49 percent of the vote, while the Conservative Party candidate, Douglas L. Hoffman, had 45.5 percent.

As for "the country changing," a few boutique issues and races for governor doesn't mean the Republicans who nearly drove America into the next Great Depression are doing anything but hunting around for their next subject to smear.

That's all they can do, they're devoid of anything but serving the most ignorant with meaningless divisions. Elect enough Republicans and eventually the demage to America won't be repairable.

Oh, and in Maine ... how to the wingnuts claim "victory" when TABOR lost, among others the wingnuts favored.

Such small minded people, these wingnuts.

"the Republicans who nearly

"the Republicans who nearly drove America into the next Great Depression"....what are you talking about? obama's done that in less than a year. If he makes it to mid-term, we'll be lucky if unemployment isn't at 12% and the Euro hasn't replaced the dollar.

What's a wingnut? Is that

What's a wingnut? Is that supposed to be a cool, hip, liberal name for conservatives? What should we call liberals; libmos? Why the name calling at all? Why not just discuss the issues like mature educated adults? I realize that'll be too much to chew on for some, but it would certainly be easier on us geniuses.
