Letters are disturbing

I'm disturbed by the so-called Christians who dedicate themselves to writing letters and spewing hate about their pet grievances, such as gay marriage, illegal immigration and government. Their self-righteous faces seem to be all over the media these days.
The Bible isn't primarily about those issues. The New Testament praises humility, generosity, meekness and brotherly love. Christians are supposed to accept government authority, pay their taxes, help their neighbors and turn the other cheek instead of being aggressive, self-centered and judgmental.
We are living in a time when large numbers of people, including many veterans, have no homes, no jobs, no money and no hope. Why isn't helping these people the highest priority for every Christian? When I read the headline "Catholic donations to fight gay marriage exceed $550,000," all I could think of is how many homeless and hungry children and families could have been helped with that much money.
As Gandhi said, "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."

You call it hate...we call it common sense and righteousness. We're as entitled to not wanting same sex marriage as you are to want it. You people keep losing sight of that. We don't hate gays; most of us don't even dislike them. We're just tired of their incessant demands they keep coming up with to change our society. Want to get along with the rest of us? Stop pissing in our tents.

Yes, we fight our cause just like you fight your cause. How about all the out of staters being brought in to rallies, how about Pingree and the amount of money paid to her to give a speech in your favor. I have relatives that are gay and cannot understand why this is going on, they are satisfied with civil union, have all their papers in order for each other, never flaunt being gay, live a normal life, have many friends ( a lot hetersexuals, too) believe in God and have a church that they love. May God bless us all.

And that's the same with most gays, they live a NORMAL life, do have many friends, believe in God and have a church that they love. What your relatives probably don't understand is why there is so much resistance to marriage equality and why people who are supposedly Christian are spewing so much hatred. I'm guessing, too, that their church supports them and doesn't preach to them that they are "living in sin," that they are "perverts," and "immoral" like the churches affiliated with Stand for Marriage Maine.
