I thought I could make it through the Question 1 debate without writing a letter, knowing that no matter how impassioned my language or how logical my reasoning, it would have no effect on the immense insecurity and obdurate ignorance that is the hallmark of those against marriage equality in Maine, but several recent writers pushed me over the edge.
First, David Dostie wrote on Oct. 20 that "to think ... God is wrong is stunning." Well, I think it is stunning that any sensible adult believes in God or believes they are qualified to speak for him.
Then on Oct. 22, Mary M. Roy stated that being gay is a "lifestyle" and is a "learned behavior." One wonders at what point in the halcyon days of her youth she "chose" to become a heterosexual.
And finally on Oct. 24, Catherine Malo wrote, "When did it become acceptable to pursue and achieve happiness at any cost?" What cost? And to whom? She later questions why the state would put a stamp of approval on a less than ideal union. Was she referring to heterosexual marriage that has a 40 percent failure rate?
I think that after months of spreading lies, hate and discontent, all those psuedo-Christians need to have Luke 6:42 tattooed to the backs of their hands.
