Poland voting on charter amendments

POLAND — In addition to state referendum questions, voters will act on a number of amendments to the town charter.

According to town officials these amendments, contained in seven questions, are primarily minor revisions that seek to correct problems such as incorrectly numbered sections and paragraphs, but do extend to clarify a few interpretation issues.

For example, the charter requires the presence of 100 registered voters in order for votes on spending articles at town meeting to be valid.

Some residents questioned whether the 100 registered voter requirement meant that 100 registered voters had to be present at the opening of polls for the town election beginning at 8 a.m. on Friday, the technical opening of Poland's two day annual town meeting, whose business session takes place on Saturday.

The revision makes it clear that 100 registered voters are required for action taken at Saturday's business session to be valid.

Polls at the Poland town hall on Maine Street will be open from 8 a.m to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3.
