Georges Valley 2, Dirigo 1
THOMASTON — It was as if the players didn't want it to end. After a full 64-minute game and two overtime periods, Georges Valley and Dirigo were still deadlocked at 1-1 in Tuesday's Western Class B quarterfinal match.
It took three rounds of penalty kicks to determine a winner, when Danielle Frye scored the game-clinching goal for Georges Valley.
Emily Chase gave the Cougars (7-8) a 1-0 advantage when she converted a nice pass from Paige Murphy. Goalie Natasha Deroche made a pair of big saves in the first half to enable Dirigo to hold a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Frye tied the contest at 11:31 of the second half on a well-struck corner kick that went untouched into the far panel. Dirigo kept their composure and sent the game into overtime.
The first round of penalty kicks ended in a 3-3 tie, while the second belonged to the goalies and finished in a 1-1 tie. Frye finally ended it for the unbeaten Buccaneers in the third round when her goal clinched it with Georges Valley holding a 2-1 edge.
Kennadi Grover finished with eight saves for the Buccaneers (13-0-2); while Deroche turned back 26 shots between the posts for Dirigo.
Winslow 4, MDI 2
WINSLOW — Winslow erupted for three goals in the second half and came
away with a 4-2 victory over MDI in the quarterfinals of the Eastern
Class B girls' soccer tournament Tuesday.
Alliya Veilleux gave the undefeated Black Raiders (15-0) a 1-0
advantage in the first frame with an assist from Kim Curtis. Jordan
Mallett made it 2-0 when she converted a pass from Curtis to start the
second half. Jamie McKay scored for MDI (8-6-1) on a penalty kick,
while Bethany VanGorder converted a pass from McKay.
Jessica Gordon and Elizabeth Ferry split time in net for Winslow,
yet needed only one save to record the win. Elizabeth Sargeant handled
netkeeping duties for MDI, turning aside 16 shots in the game.
York 9, Lisbon 0
YORK — Emma Clark registered a hat trick Tuesday to propel York to a 9-0 rout over Lisbon in a Western Class B quarterfinal girls' soccer action.
Ashley Taylor, Whitney Larue, Sara Tapley, Lindsey weigal, Macki Hill and Emily Mitchell also tallied for the Wildcats (13-2) to complete the scoring. York jumped out to a 4-0 advantage in the first frame and was never challenged.
Karli Lee and Marquis McLaughlin split time in net for York, yet neither was credited with a single save. Krystin Ramish turneed aside 18 shots between in net for the Greyhounds (10-4-1).
