Put love in perspective

It saddened my heart when I read Christopher Rioux's letter to the editor (Oct. 27) in which he publicly criticized Pamella Starbird Beliveau. I have known her for a very long time and she is one of the most loving, kind and non-judgmental human beings I have ever met. I commend her gallant and brave championing of all God's people, especially those who struggle for acceptance.

Rioux‘s statement, "... therefore, it is a grave sin for Catholics to support same-sex marriage" is outrageous. As seen in the  "Statement of Conscience" by Maine Catholics regarding marriage equality in the Sun Journal recently, many upstanding Catholics are appropriately educating themselves, discerning this issue, and are prepared to vote "no" on Question 1 as a matter of conscience.

Before his passing, I was very fortunate to have had the right and privilege to make a 36-year marriage commitment with my husband. I can see no reason why gay/lesbian couples can't have the same rights and privileges as the rest of us. After all, in God's world, love is love, and isn't love all that matters?

Bigotry and discrimination absolutely have no place in the hearts of God's people. Let's treat each other with dignity, gentleness, respect and, most especially, with unconditional love. When you put love in perspective, Beliveau's guest column makes good, common sense.

I believe the complaint expressed in the letter about beliveau's column was that she was falsly accusing the Church and those supporting question 1 of spreading lies, hate and hurtful rhetoric.

So obviously, she's not judgemental at all...

Cecillia, great letter. Just

Cecillia, great letter. Just because bigotry has been institutionalized by the Catholic Church of Maine is no reason not to call them on it.

"That man raped a woman.

"That man raped a woman. Rape is evil."

What if someone responded to that statement: Don't you judge!!!

Everyone judges given actions as being morally right or wrong - acceptable or unacceptable. God loves everyone. Absolutely true. He loves persons with same-sex attraction. He loves the prostitute, the adulterer and the thief - but that does not mean He wishes we confirm them in their sin.

Jesus Christ forgave the woman caught in adultery and ended his discourse with her by saying: "Go, and sin no more." Not, "It's okay. You just needed love. Those Jews are all just bigots."

It is not an individual

It is not an individual judgement that Catholics commit grave sin by supporting same-sex marriage - it is the express teaching of the Church regarding this issue. If you care whether you are sinning in the eyes of the Church, then look it up. But if you just want to go your own way regardless of the Church's teachings, then stop pretending to be Catholic.

It had been the express

It had been the express teaching of the Church that witches should be zealously prosecuted and burned; over 200,000 were killed.

Except they weren't witches.

So much for the Teachings of the Catholic Church.

You don't have to accept the

You don't have to accept the teachings of the Catholic Church. Just don't reject them and claim that you're Catholic. Spreading slanderous lies about her teachings is hardly an argument against them.
