Senator has spoken clearly

I was surprised and disappointed to read the editorial, "Collins should speak clearer on health care," not only because Sen. Susan Collins' position has been consistent, clear and well-publicized both in Maine and nationally, but also because she presented her position and answered every question posed by the Sun Journal's editorial board during a 45-minute meeting in August.

Sen. Collins strongly believes that addressing growing health care costs must be at the center of health care reform legislation. High cost is the major barrier to coverage for the uninsured and the reason why so many small businesses and middle income-families are struggling.

Yet, Sen. Collins has said all of the bills produced so far fall short in their efforts to rein in exploding costs and will actually drive up the cost of insurance for many middle-income families. She's also concerned that creating a taxpayer-subsidized, government-run health insurance company would ultimately lead to fewer choices and higher costs.

She has criticized the $500 billion cut in Medicare spending. Medicare already is on shaky financial ground, and Senator Collins believes that any savings should be used to stabilize its finances.

Over the past several months, Sen. Collins has held more than 170 meetings with constituents, health care providers, small business owners, AARP, and other interested stakeholders. She continues to meet with a bipartisan group of moderate Senators who are working to develop alternatives that would help reduce costs and avoid imposing onerous burdens on middle-income families, the elderly, and small businesses.

Or require her (and the rest of her kind) to accept coverage from the same plan we get shoved down our throats. Maybe they'd all see things a little differently, then.

"She's also concerned that creating a taxpayer-subsidized, government-run health insurance company would ultimately lead to fewer choices and higher costs." 47 of 50 states are now monopolized by 1 or 2 health insurance companies. Profits have risen 428% in 6 years because of their monopoly control. Those monopolies were created by the insurance companies because they are not covered under anti-monopoly laws. Sen. Collins does not support any effort including a public option to break up these monopolies and therefore lower costs and create more options. Simply she's lying.

Remember, states law have eliminated competition for health insurance, such as maine.

You can't even have a bottle of wine shipped into Maine from another state. Talk about backward mentality. And Baldacci wants people and businesses to move here?

"47 of 50 states are now monopolized by 1 or 2 health insurance companies" Which is why the first move in reform should be to allow interstate sales of health insurance. Just like auto, home, and life insurance, competition would keep the prices low. Thanks for proving another one of my points.
"Profits have risen 428% in 6 years because of their monopoly control." Please show proof. You have to know the difference between a profit and a profit margin. Health insurance companies have been showing a profit margin of just over 2%.
"created by the insurance companies because they are not covered under anti-monopoly laws" Just a flat out plain lie. The insurance company monopoly in any given state is due to regulations that keep out of state companies from competing. Again, thanks for making my point.
"Simply she's lying." There is not one wholly true statement in your post. Who's lying?
You guys make this too easy. Please see quote. (Thanks Pirate)

You're welcome, Gil, but I cannot take credit for it. The parrot came up with it after having raided the catnip bin one afternoon while I was out bucaneering. It makes him a lofty thinker; sort of savant like, but a little weird. He'll often quote George Carlin.

Fear not the enemy at the gate, for it is the enemy within that will devour you.

I have to wonder why our Senators and rep, are are so quick to re invent the wheel. YEs we currently have a system but it need to be tweekes here and there. If we want to make it portable from state to state, have pre existing illness, Then why not regulat the industy as such. It would cost us less money in the long run. We seem to want to regulate everyone else, Since insurance is a larg part of everyone expence, Having companies regulated wuld make it more compatative. and the Govermnet out.

Many companies that move out of the US market do it because we have such stringent laws governing how they are able to dispose of the harmfull trash they create. To get these companies back we would have to allow them to dump chemicals into local streams, uncontrolled spewing coming out of the smoke stacks. and dont forget only paying $1.00 per hour if the worker is lucky.

China is now starting to feel the effects of uncontrolled company greed.

"Sen. Collins strongly believes that addressing growing health care costs must be at the center of health care reform legislation"

If that were actually true she would be front and center in championing the public option which would actually cut the federal budget deficit in the first 10 years. And if she has actually held 170 meetings with constituents, then I am sure at least half have asked why she is not supporting the public option when it is the most cost containment friendly option available.

Good job regurgitating her talking points Kevin. Guess that's why you are her PR flack, and not her policy analyst.

Any problem that can't be solved with taxcuts, republicans pretend doesn't exist.

"the public option which would actually cut the federal budget deficit in the first 10 years" Please provide proof of this statement. The left keeps quoting this and it's just not true. How do you propose to implement a plan of this size that is full of subsidies and end up with a net gain? CBO director Doug Elmendorf has said the House health plan will increase the budget deficit by $239 billion over ten years, and “generate substantial increases in federal budget deficits during the decade beyond the current 10-year budget window.” How is that deficit neutral, let alone positive?

I agree Gil, Pelosi says it would also insure 36 million when the CBO says about 2%. Also the pubic option would not create competition. An no medicare is not efficient (40%) ?? Medicare denies more claims than other carriers, Also medicare is nearly Bankrupt! There's about 60 Billion in fraud each year, nothing is done to address it. As in an early point here in the forums way before this bill was put out I said that they would slide medicare into this bill and they have 400+ billion. I wander how the elderly feels about it? This health care reform is nothing but a BILL of CONTROL!

Here is just a protion of the bill that I have been reading.(2) INSUFFICIENT FUNDS.—
23 If the Secretary estimates for any fiscal year that the aggregate
24. amounts available for payment of expenses of the
25. high-risk pool will be less than the amount of the ex-penses, 26. 1 the Secretary shall make such adjustments
2 as are necessary to eliminate such deficit, including
3 reducing benefits, increasing premiums, or estab4lishing waiting lists.
think what you will.
