Pair indicted in Rumford murders

PARIS — A grand jury has indicted two men in two shooting deaths in Rumford last summer.

Eric Hamel, 19, of Mexico Avenue in Mexico, and Richard A. Moulton Jr., 20, of Franklin Street in Rumford, were each charged with two counts of murder. They are accused of killing 22-year-old Victor Reed Sheldon and 48-year-old Roger Leroy Day Jr. at Day's Pine Street residence on Aug. 3.

According to police affidavits, both men have admitted to the crimes.

Sheldon and Day were shot to death in the living room of the residence. Moulton told police that he had also been at the house, but was in the bathroom when he heard three gunshots. A passing resident also heard the shots and saw a man with shoulder-length hair and dark clothing leave the building.

Hamel became a suspect after a series of interviews by police, and told police he had shot the two men. He also said he had buried the handgun used in the crime in a section of woods on Oak Street, a dead-end road about two-tenths of a mile from Day's residence, and police were able to recover the weapon.

Moulton later told police that he had helped plan the murders. He said he and Hamel intended to kill both Sheldon and Day in response to an assault by Sheldon on his estranged girlfriend, who was dating Moulton at the time.

Sheldon, who was staying with Day, was charged with domestic assault against the woman in July of 2008 during an altercation at Moulton's apartment. The charge was dismissed on the day of his murder, one day before he was scheduled to appear in court on it.

My underatanding is that

My underatanding is that this was the result of long term domestic violence that the police and DA ignored and failed to prosecute, abuse that continued even after divorce. It was my understanding that the killings were the day after the DA dropped the charges AGAIN, I suspect when and if this goes to trial it will come out that it was to protect the woman from further assaults at the hands of the two men that were killed. I wonder when it is all ou how many pf you men would not be inclined to do the same for your daughters, sisters and other female family since the police and DA have completely failed.

"My underatanding [sic] is"

"My underatanding [sic] is" = gossip

"It was my understanding" = rumors

"how many pf [sic] you men" = sexist

"police and DA have completely failed" = opinion not based in fact

My understanding fool had

My understanding fool had nothing to do with rumor but multiple news reports listing the charges against the decedants including charges of assault against the female the day before. And since I only moved to the area in June to serve as director of this community service project, have twp daughters and a son in college classes and am preparing for my PhD I more than have my hands full, I definitely do not have time for gossip.

Since two men are accused/been indicted in this killing it would be rediculous to have said anything but men in my comment. And of course it is my opinion that the police and DA failed to protect the young woman and I dare say others given the legnthy number of investigations, accusations, arrests and so forth that are a matter of public record. I wpuld not presume to imply that because someone beat their wife say 100 times and it was, say recorded it would be your opinion they are a wife beater and if the police never arrested the person or the DA never prosecited them I would definitely not presume T that it is your opinion the police and DA failed.

Why did it take almost three

Why did it take almost three months to get an indictment? Seems the judicial system is dragging its heels, or perhaps there is more to this case than meets the eye.
