Western Class C football playoffs: Clippers hold off No. 2 Andies

LIVERMORE FALLS — Quarterback Eric Estabrook threw an 11-yard touchdown to Brodie Woodsom with 1:21 left to play as the Yarmouth football team rallied for a thrilling 35-28 upset win against No. 2 Livermore Falls in a Class C Campbell Conference quarterfinal playoff game.

But excitement didn't end there. The Andies had the ball inside the 5-yard line and quarterback Sam Whiting was stopped short on the final play of the game. It was Whiting and Chandler White who highlighted the final drive with passes and runs during the Andies' last gasp at Griffen Field.

The game was interesting on a number of fronts because both high-scoring offenses run the Wing-T. Livermore Falls featured White (1386 yards, 21 touchdowns) in Class C. Yarmouth had won six straight games and posed a serious threat.

The lead changed hands five times over the final two and half quarters. The Clippers went ahead 27-21 on a David Dietz 2-yard run. It was short-lived because the Andies drove 65 yards, with Ethan Hutchins (77 yards, 16 rushes) scoring on a 21-yard run. Trevor Timberlake kicked his fourth PAT for a 28-27 lead with 4:21 to go.

"We knew it would be a tough game," Yarmouth coach Rich Higgins said. "My backs had found it easier going by breaking several during the season, but they really had to work tonight."

Livermore Falls had scored two times in the first half to lead 14-13. Hutchins ran in from 6 and Whiting threw a 25-yard TD to Nate Michaud. White (76 yards, 21 rushes) scored a 5-yard TD to give the Andies a 21-19 lead.

No. 7 Yarmouth who was playing in its first-ever playoff game and refused to back down as Estabook threw a shovel pass to Andrew Gabrielson for a 45-yard TD. Nate Pingtore broke loose for a 44-yard TD on the third play from scrimmage in the third quarter.

"We came out fired up in the second half," Gabrielson said. "It hadn't been there in the first half. We needed to keep our heads in the game. The last minute was scary."

The Andies defense had trouble stopping thee run. The Clippers gained 270 yards. The Andies gained 235 yards. Alex Rose ran for 62 yards.
