MECHANIC FALLS — Voters on Tuesday elected six representatives to a new town charter commission.
Only four residents placed their names on the ballot for the nine-member commission: Oliver Emery, Micheal Needham, Randall Plummer Gary Purington. All four were voted in Tuesday.
In addition, two write-in candidates — Peter Ford and Lawrence Newth — were also elected.
The Town Council determined that a new commission is needed primarily to deal with changes that must be made in the town charter as a result of Mechanic Falls joining Minot and Poland to become Regional School Unit 16.
Voters directly elect six of the nine members on the commission and the Town Council appoints three, customarily choosing from the names of write-in candidates. The council will now contact other potential candidates to determine if they are willing to serve and proceed from there to fill out the nine-member commission.
