Lewiston voters reject same-sex marriage

LEWISTON — By about a 2,000-vote margin, voters rejected the state law allowing same-sex marriage, based on unofficial results from the city clerk's office.

According to the tally, 7,300 Lewiston residents voted yes on Question 1 and 5,121 voted no.

Turnout for the vote was high for an off-year election, with 54 percent of registered voters casting ballots.

On other referenda, Lewiston voters turned down proposals to cut municipal excise taxes, repeal the 2007 school consolidation law, and enact state and local government spending caps, known as TABOR.

The vote on TABOR, Question 4, was decided by a margin of about 1,900 votes, out of more than 12,000 cast. Lewiston residents voted 6,964 against TABOR, 5,094 in favor, according to the unofficial results.

Voters also approved Question 5, a referendum that would legalize medical marijuana dispensaries, and voted for a $71 million bond issue for transportation improvements.

Lewiston voters rejected a constitutional amendment that would grant more time for local officials to certify petition signatures.

Now the women of Maine don't have to worry about their men running off to marry their boyfriends, but they still have to worry about the priests who want to date their sons. Just lovely...

To all gay couples who desire the same benefits and protections afforded to all civil marriages: I suggest having a lawyer draw up all the papers required to ensure that you have every advantage of a civil marriage. Then send your legal bills to the Catholic Church, Stand For Marriage Maine, and any other group that financially supported the defeat of marriage equality. In addition, start a legal fund and solicit contributions from those who staunchly argue that gays HAVE equal rights.

what happened to seperation of church and state? What is going on here? We come so far to prove were still idiots. Come on people. Is the church hurting so bad it needs to stir up trash. Sunday mass must be a little thin. So now the church controls how we look at people and the lifes we lead in our own homes. Show me where God is my ruler and a governing body. Wake up

All I've ever heard is every one is equal. Equality. Well here there is no such thing! If you're just a little bit different you're not worthy to be treated equal. When you were kids, didn't your parents tell you that it was impolite to stare? Especially if it was someone who was in a wheelchair, or was disfigured? Now those people who voted yes are telling their children that it is okay to stare. I am straight, I am not a homo. In fact I am a single woman with a child. Years ago interracial marriages weren't thought of. No one wanted to accept that either, now it is pretty commonplace to see an African/American man/ woman with a white man/woman. We also see woman in sports, or in the military. Even the military would discriminate against gays/ lesbians who wanted to serve their country. Who cares! A lot of people think that homosexuality is a disease. In a way it is. When we are born we don't plan on liking the same sex. We don't choose our parents. I think the problem is that when we think of homosexuals we think of predators. A lot of people think that because someone is gay, that they will end up molesting some child or person.
It also says in the commandments " Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." so basically those of you who voted yes wants someone to discriminate against you. Just wait, change is coming, and it's gonna be huge Are you ready for it? Can you handle it. Come on people. WAKE UP!!! All the churches are closing, doesn't that tell you something. I'm catholic and I voted no on #1 and I'm proud of it. I'll do it again. Just because someone ignorant people think that because they don't like that then they can set the standards for others. Like seat belts... I hate them I've seen first hand a few friends die because the seat belts got stuck or because they cut open their abdomens in wrecks. The seat belts may save some lives, but being responsible and careful when driving will save even more. But getting back to the point, All people should be treated equallly. I know we do have to make some decisions regarding how to treat some people, child molesters, rapists, murders etc... But even they can get married. So whats the big deal. Will it kill your child to learn that being gay is not a bad thing. what about that child, or teenager that is gay, but is too scared to say anything. What about the straight parents whose son has just told them he's gay. Will they still feel the same way when their son wants to marry his boyfriend? So change is coming so be ready for it, I am are you?

AND...That's after every non-resident Bates College student was recruited by the No on #1 camp to register to vote in Maine to help tip the scales in their favor.

So Maine has voted that NOT ALL PEOPLE have equal rights, just those that subscribe to Christian teachings. This is a sad day for Maine, an even sadder day for America. Over the past several weeks, I have read and listened to an incredible amount of vitriol aimed at homosexuals, all because they are a little different than what a particular group wants. If abolishing slavery had been put to a popular vote, in all probability it would have continued on for another 50 or 100 years. We'll never know that, because one brave president, a Republican, had the courage to stand against the popular tide and issue a proclamation putting an end to an evil practice. Yet today, we still have an evil practice, the dicrimination against homosexuals, all because of tenets based on archaic beliefs. Please, don't spout bible verse and scriptures. Quoting the bible was also used to support slavery, Jim Crow laws, the prohibition against inter-racial and inter-faith marriages, the subjugation of women, all by people who perverted the teachings of the bible to support their narrow views. Today, I weep for Maine and I weep for America.
