Rash of car break-ins has Cumberland sheriff warning Lakes Region residents
Authorities in Cumberland County are warning residents of the Lakes Region to double-check that their cars are locked following a rash of break-ins that have hit the area since late last week.
Police have handled 26 reports of thefts from car owners since Oct. 29, according to a news release issued Tuesday by the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office. While a majority of the cases occurred in Naples, thefts from vehicles were also reported in Casco, Gray, Standish, Raymond and Naples. In most cases, the cars were unlocked, often parked at the owner's home, and stolen items were left in plain view. The two missing items of most concern for investigators are two hunting firearms that were stolen from different people.
The case remains under investigation and no arrests had been made as of Tuesday night. The sheriff's office reminded car owners to lock their doors, keep valuables out of sight or remove them from the vehicles, and to report suspicious activity to their local police department. Anyone with information or questions is asked to contact Capt. Don Goulet at (207) 774-1444, extension 2110.
