Climate experts to be featured at UMF climate forum Thursday

FARMINGTON — Climate change and greenhouse gas effects are up for discussion Thursday during a Climate Forum featuring two international climate experts.

The event held at the University of Maine at Farmington offers three presentations throughout the day that are open to the public. Each event will be held in Lincoln Auditorium of Roberts Learning Center.

Author Paul Mayewski will present a program on "Climate Change: Perspective, Surprises and Opportunity," at noon.

From his book "The Ice Chronicles," Mayewski will focus on the what, why and how fast climate changes. How humans are impacted and what to do next will also be addressed.

Rises in greenhouse-gas trends that coincide with agriculture is the basis of author William Ruddiman's 4 p.m. presentation, "Did early farming prevent a new ice age? The answer is yes." From his book, "Plows, Plagues and Petroleum," Ruddiman will discuss the suggestion that gas emissions stopped the onset of a new ice age.

A panel discussion featuring both Ruddiman and Mayewski will be held at 7 p.m. also in Lincoln Auditorium. Rob Lively will moderate the discussion.

The events are sponsored by the University Culture Committee & Sustainable Campus Coalition.
