Maine bishop grateful for gay marriage vote

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The leader of the Roman Catholic Church in Maine is thanking the state's voters for repealing the state's gay marriage law.

Unofficial tallies from 93 percent of Maine's precincts show the side that called for a people's veto with 52.9 percent of the vote.

Bishop Richard Malone issued a statement Wednesday in which he thanked Mainers for protecting and reaffirming marriage as it's been understood "for millennia by civilizations and religions around the world." Malone also said respect and acceptance of all people regardless of sexual orientation is not a point of controversy.

Rea Carey of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force says that despite Tuesday's loss, the tide is turning nationwide in favor of marriage equality. Carey says her group believes Maine will join states that extend security and legal protections to gay couples.

My husband and I left the Catholic Church many years ago for the simple reason that the leadership of the church had allowed pedophiles to continue working w/ children and molesting them. If my view, the church leadership does represent the teachings of Christ, but take care of their own interests.

Very good there bishop malone, squandering your precious church's resources to keep same gender people down as second class citizens is exactally what your pope wants you to do. Is there a cardinal position opening for your valiant efforts in 'Rome? I think Christ would be plenty ticked to hear you cast the first stone.

. .Not to worry , Dick . Nobody is getting married in those two churches that you closed up the other day in Lewiston ( thanks publikwerks :) It's the staid old fogies against the young and restless with newer ideas and acceptance , per usual . Pray hard for vocations , Priests

Yeah. Thanks for all the hate mongering TV ads and pamphlets attached to my front door or spilling out of my mailbox.

Thank you Bishop Malone for proving my point that the Catholic church is a joke, and completely oppressive. I will never regret my decision to dump the Catholic Faith I was born into, and to make the realization that established religion is just man made and a waste of time!

I just wanted to thank Bishop Richard Malone for closing the two churches in Lewiston. They really have been glooming up the joint.
