Lewiston man charged with OUI after Freeport pedestrian injured

FREEPORT — Police said a 14-year-old Freeport boy was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after being hit by a car Wednesday evening. The driver of the vehicle was arrested and charged with operating under the influence.

The teenager was identified by police as Shane Everett. Police Chief Gerald Schofield said Everett was walking on Hunter Road near his home at about 5:15 p.m. on Nov. 4 when he was struck by a 2004 Ford Taurus driven by John J. Fortier of 61 Fairlawn Ave., Lewiston. Fortier, 46, was traveling north and the boy was walking on the same side of the road, police said.

Police on Thursday were still trying to determine if the boy was walking with or against traffic.

Schofield said Fortier was charged with OUI resulting in injury or death. He was released on bail Wednesday night.

The boy was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he remained in critical condition late Thursday night, a nursing supervisor said.

"We are still putting all the pieces together," the chief said. "We have called in the Brunswick police to help reconstruct the accident scene and to get a better idea of the situation."

Schofield said when all the evidence is gathered and analyzed, it will be turned over to the Cumberland County district attorney to determine if there will be additional charges.
