What do other high schools do?

Statewide, most high schools post grades online and parents are encouraged to monitor their children's work, according to the Maine Department of Education.

But the department does not keep track of which schools do not send home report cards. When a few area high school officials were asked if they stopped sending home report cards they responded:

Poland Regional High School: Yes.

"We do send reports home to parents to tell us if they do not have access to a computer," said Regional School Union 16 Superintendent Dennis Duquette. "Otherwise, the report cards are released through a parental portal, which is how parents can review their children's progress in school."

Report cards are sent home for pre-K-8 schools, Duquette said.

Lewiston High School: No.

"We do have electronic grades both for parents and students, but we still are in the business of sending home report cards through the mail," said Principal Gus LeBlanc. "We've talked about the possibility of going all electronic, but we feel there's still a segment of our population who would not have access to grades. The report card is one of the few communications that provide parents a benchmark of their student's progress."

Mt. Blue High School in Farmington: No.

"We do still send home report cards, but not in the mail. We send them home with students," said Principal Monique Poulin. Not sending report cards home "has been tossed around," but there are many parents who don't have access to computers, she said.
