Three hurt in Durham crashes

DURHAM — Three drivers were hurt and four vehicles demolished in separate accidents on slush-covered roads Thursday morning, state police said.

Jennifer Fitzpatrick, 59, of Durham had to be extricated from her Subaru after it and a Toyota driven by Kenneth Koenke, 61, of Freeport, collided on Route 136 at 7:30 a.m., Trooper Mike Chavez said. Crews from Durham Fire and Rescue and Freeport Rescue got Fitzpatrick out of her car.

Both drivers were taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where Fitzpatrick was listed in serious condition and Koenke was treated and released, a nursing supervisor said Thursday night.

Chavez said the investigation into the cause of the collision was continuing.

In the second accident, Chavez said, Candy Steabman, 31, of Lisbon lost control of her vehicle on slippery Route 125 at 8:16 a.m., crossed the highway and crashed head-on into an SUV driven by Nicole Daigle, 34, of Lewiston. Lisbon Emergency and Lisbon Fire Department responded.

Steabman was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston and Daigle to Parkview Adventist Medical Center in Brunswick, he said. Neither was listed as a patient at those facilities Thursday night, nursing supervisors said. Steabman was given a ticket for operating a vehicle with a bald tire, the trooper said.

Damage to Fitzpatrick's Subaru was set at $1,500; to Koenke's 2005 Toyota, $9,000; to Daigle's 2005 GMC, $8,000; and to Steabman's 2002 Suzuki, $8,000.
