Former Bethel chief appointed officer

NORWAY — Selectmen on Thursday night unanimously appointed former Bethel police Chief Alan Carr as a part-time police officer.

Carr, who resigned late last month from the department he has served since 2003, said he was "honored" to work with the Norway Police Department and residents. His new job will be to help fill in gaps in shift coverage.

Police Chief Rob Federico said Carr, who worked for 37 years as a state police trooper, would bring tremendous experience to the position.

Carr, 61, resigned from the Bethel position, citing personal reasons. He told the Sun Journal at the time that he had decided to take a break from law enforcement and take "one day at a time."

He resides in Albany Township and is the owner of Western Maine Public Safety Supplies in Oxford.

During Thursday night's meeting with selectmen, Carr said he was interested in filling in empty shifts on the Norway force while he decides what to do with his future.

Federico is in the process of hiring a full-time police officer to fill out the ranks. He told the board that he and a committee that includes Selectman Russ Newcomb and Rowe Elementary School Principal George Sincerbeaux expect to make an appointment by Jan. 1.

The candidates have undergone their oral boards, and the top candidates are undergoing background checks, which can take several weeks.

The only reason Carr and Doar had issues is because Cole stuck his face where it did not belong after he left. Cole has been shooting for County coverage since he was town manager. And now that he is County admin, he is still trying to control what goes on in Bethel.

Or maybe something happened and Bethel got rid of a liability and is not adveritising the event and giving anyone any ideas on suing them. Jim Dorr is a very smart and savy manager and he would know how to handle a bad situation he discovered discretely. But we will only find ou if someone talks.
